Yes. He must return within 1 year or risk losing his green card. They may give him some grief for being abroad more than 6 months, but usually one time just gets a verbal warning.

Worst case, if he needs to stay longer, he can apply for a re-entry permit once he is in the US. This lets him be abroad for up to 2 years.

He needs to establish and maintain ties to the US - so file those US tax returns, try to get a US bank account and/or driver's license while here, etc.

Yes, and agree with geowrian except that as a school/college student he is presumably a dependent on parents’ tax return and won’t be filing his own. (I assume he is over 18 so won’t be naturalizing on entry?)

If his visa is just issued now, and he has up to 6 months to enter, I’d suggest if possible entering around a suitable academic break (maybe Easter if timing works?) to both be comfortably before visa expiry and to minimize time out the country - as noted above less than 6 months is ideal, though it only “has” to be a year. Ironically delaying entry to keep absence below 6 months could lead to being able to naturalize sooner than entering earlier but staying out longer than 6 months.
