Two men are being questioned after police received reports of harassment against a dolphin which has become a tourist attraction off the Kent coast.

The pair, aged 25 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of cruelty to an animal.

It followed several 999 calls regarding Dave the dolphin, who has been seen swimming in waters off Sandgate, Folkestone, for more than a year.

Kent Police's Marine Unit has issued several warnings that anyone getting too close to Dave could be arrested.

The two men, said to be from the Folkestone area, were being held under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

They were arrested at about 0530 BST on Saturday.

Insp Gavin Roy said: "Dolphins are well loved and friendly towards humans.

"They are protected by law and should be treated with respect."

Animal welfare charities have previously expressed concern over swimmers, kayakers and other watercraft users possibly causing distress or alarm to Dave. Video footage of a boat's oar almost coming into contact with the dolphin was criticised when it was posted on the YouTube website in April.
