means tested benefits/ hospital

Recently I was in the hospital with my wife and they give you your estimated bill and say they'll bill insurance. No biggy really, but they mentioned they have financial assistance that goes according to your income. A sliding scale/ forgiveness type of thing. I don't need it, but it got my wheels turning is that a means tested benefit? It seems as if it is from the hospital not the government, but I honestly have no real idea.

Just wanted to get everyone's views on it.

No one has an opinion or any knowledge on this?

Kinda hard to opine based on the information provided.   You couldn't provide much for background information on what it is.

YMMV

If you go to just about any hospital. They have sliding scales (financial assistance) based upon income. I don't get what is so hard to understand about that, every hospital I have ever been to has it. You fill out financial information about any assets you may have any your wages and you provide some bank statements. Then you get approved or denied based upon the totality of the circumstances. I guess they are mainly there to help underinsured people. It seems to be run by the hospitals not by the government, but I would assume the government provides some kind of incentive for them to do this.

Just because they use a means test for eligibility doesn't mean it's a federal means tested benefit.   It could be federally funded,  state funded or privately funded via an endowment,  foundation or some other non profit organization.

YMMV
