GC got approved while staying aboard with extension letter

Hi guys,

I filed I-751 for removing conditions on residency last year and recently I got approved for the new card. However, I'm currently visiting my family aboard and I may stay for a while. Can I travel back to the US with my expired GC and extension letter? Or should I ask someone to mail my new GC to me so I can travel back with the new GC? Thank you for information!

You can enter with the extension letter.

If the green card is valid (meaning it's before the expiration date of the green card + the time extended via the extension letter), then you can use that fine. No need to use the new GC for entry...CBP will have your info on file already. The only issue is with boarding the plane - which is where having the GC + extension letter comes into play.

My GC expired last year. That's why I received the extension letter for 18 months.

So the GC is still valid when held with the extension letter. The extension letter extends the validity period of the GC (it does nothing by itself). So you're fine.

That's a much, much more difficult set of circumstances...

1) Abroad over 1 year = required presumption of abandoning residence

2) Expired green card = unlikely to have a means to board the plane to the US

3) Late filing of I-751

I suggest posting your own topic as it is considerably different than the OP's case.

I asked someone to open the approval notice from the USCIS and on the letter it says "do not travel before receiving the new GC". Should I be concerned since I'm already outside the country currently?

Is your extension letter valid?   If so you can travel on that.
