Green Card Expires in 5 months of applying for N-400

My wifes 10 year green card expires January 2020. We submitted and N-400 on August 1.  That puts us 5 month away from her green card expiring.  Do we have to file an I-90? or will she get an extension at her N-400 Biometrics appointment to keep her GC from expiring?

Phone USCIS and request an infopass appointment so she can get her passport stamped for free, which will provide physical proof of LPR status for up to 1 year or so (and she can use that to travel as well).  You have to do this BEFORE the greencard expires, or else they'll tell you to file the i-90 and pay for it.

 

Edited to add:  You must phone them to request the infopass appointment, you can't schedule them online anymore.

But it says on USCIS website that if you file the N-400 inside of 6 month of your Green Card expiring you have to file an I-90.  6 months or more you do not have to file an I-90.  2 Agents at USCIS told me this as well, but one agent told me I do not have to, she told me to call 1 month before her greencard expires and get an infopass appt to get a sticker on the back of her card.  So, I am getting mixed information from USCIS agents.  She has her biometrics in 2 weeks for the N-400.

She is eligible to get the stamp for free.  Naturally, they'd prefer you to file the i-90 and pay the fee instead, since USCIS will happily take your money at any time.

I-551 stamp is no cost option as other said.  Check your N-400 time line of your local office to guess your N-400 interview time.
