Naturalization Certificate as ID for REAL ID (California)

The day after I naturalize I’m planning on heading to the DMV (CA) to get REAL ID, using the naturalization certificate as proof of ID.

Am I right in thinking you immediately get your identification documents straight back from the DMV?

Asking because ideally I want to try and do my passport application the same day

My experience about 9 days after ceremony with certificate in hand...

  • Social Security told me I was supposed to wait 2 weeks for USCIS to populate the SAVE database with my new USC status. They had to find it in SAVE. The certificate alone didn't suffice.
  • The DMV told me I was supposed to wait 2 weeks for USCIS to populate the SAVE database with my new USC status. They had to find it in SAVE. The certificate alone didn't suffice.

If CA has adopted the SAVE program in an effort to beef up their compliance with realID, the day after the ceremony may be too soon. Fortunately both agencies found my status even though the suggested two weeks had not passed.

Ahhh thank you for the info.

Maybe I’ll just hold off on the real id for now, and do passport first just in case there are any issues

I don't think they would keep your certificate. You may just stand in line and get turned away. Or you may score a new license. I don't know if CA even uses the SAVE database.

I recently got a letter from my DMV saying I need to get an updated license, but I have until next year so not a rush. Also go to SSA at some point so they change your record to USC.

Yeahh I get they won’t keep it, but I’d rather not go to the dmv if there’s a chance of not getting the license lol.

I think I’ll just apply for my passport and sort out the real id afterwards :)

CA DMV does use SAVE but it isn't their sole tool. If you have any questions you can contact the Issuing Department directly at (916) 657-7790. I recommend to go to a DLPC if you don't have an appointment: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/fo/driver_license_processing_centers Stanton DLPC might be a 40 minute drive from your location.
