Hello there! I just recently joined this community in order to receive some help / answer some questions I have. 

 

I am currently in school in Canada for personal support worker, my partner lives in America I am wondering if I could just get a work visa to move to where they live or do we need to get married? And does anyone know start costs of all this ?

A work visa would be something you obtain via a employer's sponsorship. If eligible, look into the the TN visa (you didn't note your profession or nationality, only residency). After that, you're in the same boat as virtually the rest of the world with regards to a work visa - they are not easy to obtain. Note that a TN visa is a non-immigrant visa and requires intent to return home once complete. If your goal is to move to the US long-term, this is not the route to go - you would be looking at family-based immiration options.

 

If you intend to live in the US long term and your partner is a US citizen, the immediate options available are a K-1 visa (for a fiance) or CR-1 visa (for a spouse).

If they are a green card holder instead, the only option is as a spouse (F2A preference).

Gotcha. I'm not familiar with the field so I won't speak to if it falls under TN visa eligibility or not. A Google search should give you a good idea if it's on the map as an option or not (or if somebody else chimes in here).

 

As noted, if the plan is to marry and live in the US, the K-1 or CR-1 visas would be the obvious choices.
