I-129f request for extension, concerning response from consulate

So we have had a bit of an unexpected personal hold up on ability to book our K1 visa interview. Ours expires Feb 15th and we might not be able to book our interview until late March (putting us at roughly a May interview date). Up until now I've always read that Montreal is good at extending the expiry date of I-129fs, and typically do it automatically.... but I sent a request to extend it yesterday and got this reply from the Consulate:

We encourage applicants to pursue their K-1 visa applications as soon as possible, since the validity of the I-129F petition is only 4 months.

Although consular officers have the authority to revalidate the I-129F petition for another 4 months, they are not legally required to do so for every case. These decisions are rendered on an individual case basis at the time of the interview.

Does anyone have experience requesting an extension they can share? Has this always been the standard reply or are they cracking down? Should I be worried? Definitely have convinced myself that our visa will eventually be denied because of our delay :(
