I'm only surprised that my (rather boring and maybe lame) comparison of EU with NAFTA didn't murder this thread.

Nothing like having a private joke with yourself that noone else understands

oh dear ereknose are you sure nobody else gets it ?

don't you know that texas produces steers ? did you think that was something to do with driving ?

I went to Texas and they said I would see nothing but steers and queers -

sure didnt see no steers

you obviously didn't make that joke while there, as i've not seen anything about you wearing dentures.

I know about the immediate violent nature of American society and the physical rather than verbal response which is normal of a society which is encouraged to use violence as a response or even a pre-emptive strike - we have areas like that too - caveman stuff

(John Wayne's fault or was he reflecting society)

- so no I didn't.

That would be like staying at Dracula's party after sundown

alan

i guess you carry a bucket around frequently in case someone hears your anti-american sentiments and your biased statements about texas.........

I wasn't suggesting you didn't know the tests. I was assuming that there were more than the two of us reading this page, and that they may not! :)

Hehe, that's true; I keep forgetting that people outside the UK won't know a thing about this.

The fact that they are so subjective is why I believe they will definitely be passed. Who gets to decide? The government. Who will want it passed? The government. When those who most oppose it - the older generation, generally - are gone, the opposition will be lessened, I believe.

This is where I disagree; there are plenty of eurosceptics in the younger generations. I don't think it's only the OAPs who are opposed.

I guess Charles that saywhat must not ever attend sporting events.

UK football ("soccer" to yanks/canucks) fans are known to be passionate about whom they support--and supporting the wrong team can easily cause a riot there.

(and its also duplicated for ice-hockey, in Montreal--though in that case, the "wrong team" is any from a non-French-speaking city).

Wouldn't that require more a permanent metal jaw-frame?

more than likely.

God these posters who do one liners or half liners - I bet they communicate with a string of grunts at home while they are laid on their cheap settees drinking fizzy weak american lager and trying to figure who they will hospitalize next......

I bet they think a short sharp put down hacks it - it might if it was of better quality - fantasizing about doing violence to me isn't that clever and doesn't finish the job - leaves it unfinished like vietnam and iraq

Seems evolution (which they deny) is in reverse there

I agree that there are still plenty of Eurosceptics left in the UK, but I think that most Brits understand that the country isn't large enough to go it alone anymore. Anti-Americanism, I would suggest, is bigger than Eurosceptism (or at least was when I was last there) and if the UK has to go one way or another, it will look East rather than West.

I'm confused, alan. Your timeline says you're the petitioner but you're apparently the beneficiary. Why would you want to come to the U.S. when you have such strong negative feelings about it? Just curious.

I am dubbed as anti-American here (all you have to say is the milk tastes better in the UK and you are branded as anti-american) but I am not at all - although I loathe that redneck section of the population and they have representatives on here - and I try to wind them up so they expose their violent tendencies.. Let's hope that the US gets back on a track that Europe can support.

I cringe every time my USC wife opens her mouth (to buy my beer!) here in the Uk because I can see some of the looks she gets... and she was not welcomed with open arms at work either... a lot of the other women assumed that she would be lording it over them and doing the imperialist master race bit. They are slowly getting there now..

But it's a new thing and iraq related - it is not irreversible.

As I said on another forum - I think the Brits are transferring their guilt onto the US because they allowed themselves to be suckered by Blair....

So in 10 years or when the iraqi oil runs out, we might be all buddies again

oh charles come on ! I deserve to be butchered for saying what I said and you are just too kind to me ...

My mission is to flush out violent rednecks and expose them - so stop teasing and tell me if you are one of them..

If you aren't then I am off to eat a black pudding with custard on...

saywhat,

The Atlantic is a longer swim than the Rio Grande. I don't think Mexicans would worry much about Bulgarians taking their job opportunities.

Yodrak

.....

Easy exchange of labour which could go where it is needed, the cheap jobs in the US would go to say Bulgarians which would remove the incentive for Mexicans to cross the border as there would be no cheap jobs at all for them.

.....

Can anyone see any down side ?

I'm not sure it's guilt, although many will feel suckered by Blair, I agree. He did not live up to the potential we (myself included) expected from him in 1997. Millions were against the war before he sided with Bush and resent him for that. There's no guilt for those people.

You may be right - with a new administration, the US may regain some of that 'special relationship' that was more evident before and immediately after Sept 11th.

Believe it or not I've watched Stanley Kubrick movies too...
 What did Kubrick have to do with "Officer & Gentleman"?

Not seen it for a while - but I thought it was in Full Metal Jacket.

You're both right, but An Officer and a Gentleman was first (using Oklahoma rather than Texas...)
