K3- skipping EAD for SSN??

Hii Everyone,

I know that from the guide given regarding how to apply Social Security Number if you are coming with a K3 visa, you will have to first apply the EAD.

But, I wonder if it is possible to just skip the EAD part and go ahead with the AOS, and once I got my Conditional Green Card, I could just apply SSN without any problems?

I've tried to look for more details on the SSA website regarding K3 visa applying SSN, apparently they don't have any.

Thanks so much for your help!

Angelique

You can't get an SSN until EAD (yeah, I know, it sucks). You can however get an ITIN if you need one though.

misa and nakashima ayumi,

Did you two read Angelique's question before answering? Your responses do not address the question that she asked.

It depends. I know that people come here with tourist visa and get SSN.

I was here US between 2001-2005 and had a SSN. then I got married and come to US in 2007 with k3 visa. SO I went to Social Security office to change my name to my married on my old security card. Then, they asked me for EAD. They were like, we need your EAD to do that. It doesnt make any sense at all. But, I wonder if anything make any sense :)

I am sure there are bunch of people here who got their SSN, or changed their existing Social Secutiry card (name change) with only k-3 visa, and there are some they could not.

So if i were you, just go ahead and give it a chance :)

Just another comment! We just found out a web page

http://www.dhs.gov/ximgtn/programs/editorial_0731.shtm

Using this web page you can ask help for a case you are having problems. It is unbelievable and unfortunate that organizations (USCIS etc.) can make some mistakes which makes people miserable. There are some case examples given in an article.

Best of luck,

DU

Once you have your conditional greencard, you dont need a EAD so yes, you can wait until you get that to apply for your SSN.

I did the same thing, not needing to work etc thought I would just save the time but situations change and we have had a bit of a wait for my interview, but recently purchasing our first house did change the ballgame a bit and I applied for my EAD and now have my SSN.

The only reason I applied for the EAD was for the SSN, since an interview seemed to be a long time coming.

The only thing that I did need was the ITIN so that taxes could be filed properly, but I had that before I arrived here.

I 130 & I129F (K3) and AOS info in timeline

She is NOT asking if she can get a SSN with a K 3 Visa. She is asking if she can get one with a GREEN CARD.
