Name Error on Green Card

Hello all. I'd like the advice of forum members for an issue that my wife and I just discovered.

After months of waiting for my wife's green card (CR1 from marriage), it finally arrived in the mail today. We were still celebrating when we noticed that USCIS, not us, made an error on her name. The error is as follows. Names used below are not real, but are for demonstration only. On her foreign passport, her name appears as follows:

First name: Mary

Middle name: Susan

Last name: Smith

On the front of the new green card, USCIS appended her middle name to her first name and duplicated her middle name, as follows:

Surname: Smith

Given Name: Mary Susan S

On the back of the card where it has all the numbers and codes, it lists her name as SMITH<<MARY<<SUSAN<<SUSAN.

So like I said, it seems like they simply duplicated the middle name so it appears twice. We called USCIS, and they said we need to send it back with a completed I-90. No word on how long processing will take or if we'll have to pay the fee. We will be traveling soon, so doing this will mean she'll be without a card during the trip. Risky.

Question: Is this error a big deal? Should we just use the card as is? The names aren't wrong. The middle name is simply duplicated. What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Unless you are traveling internationally, there really is no risk in not having the green card.  If you are travelling internationally, send the I-90 and green card for correction when you get back.  It takes a few weeks.

Yes, we are traveling internationally, hence my concern. I'm curious about the likelihood that 2 identical middle names on a green card would cause an issue at the immigration desk when we return.

Probably will be a problem, but maybe not.  Very risky.  That's one of the facts of life for US immigration.  Don't plan travel until all is in order.  On the other hand, if you will leave AND return within a year of the first entry, the stamp in the passport next to the visa will serve as a green card for a year.  If that time frame fits, send the green card in.  Carry a copy of both sides of it and a copy of your I-90, just in case of any issues.
