Once we receive the receipt number and the paper stating our petition was received, what is our next step? USCIS is telling us that we are to follow the instructions listed on that paper, but there are no instructions, other than what to do if our address changes.

I believe you've received Form I-797C, the first Notice Of Action (NOA1). Now all you have to do is wait. If your address changes, it should tell you what to do.

Seem like you are on the first stage, so you just wait until they send out another!

Here on Visajourney.com you can go to the "Processing Times" and see how longs yours should take. Typically it takes around 6 months until you receive your second Notice Of Actions (NOA2). If you did some mistakes in the petition it might even take longer. But let's not hope for that! 😉

You will receive I-797 NOA stating whether your case was approved and that your petition was sent to NVC (National Visa Center). It took my case roughly 6 months to get the letter the petition was approved. 

 

You can see the status of your case through the USCIS website just sign up

Once it sent to NVC you can check your status pay for fees etc through the website below. You need a case and invoice number to log on. Which you can get by calling the NVC customer phone number
