Hi. Could you explain to me what AOS is and when do we do the AOS? Also, my fiance speaks very little english and I speak very little portuguese. I heard that we might have problems getting our K-1 visa approved because we do not speak the other's language well. Is this true? Also, I have heard that the interview will be in English. Will it be a problem if my fiance only speaks portuguese during her interview? Will the interviewer give my fiance a choice of which language to use during the interview? Does anyone have advice on what the interview will be like? Will the questions be difficult or easy? Will the interviewer deeply probe or is the interview a basic summary of how we met, etc...? Thanks.

AOS = adjustment of status. This is when you apply for the greencard after the marriage. We have a whole forum on here for that :) Regarding all the specific embassy questions, look on your regions sub-forum and embassy info up at the top of the screen (under the ppls faces). Good luck to you!

Not knowing a common language is definetly a red flag. But no, the interview can be in english or the official language of that country. In most cases anyway.

The interviewer will most likely ask questions to establish the validity of the relationship. They will ask questions about you to make sure your fiance knows you. Unless you have a criminal record, most of the questions should be easy. If you do have a criminal record, they will likely ask your fiancee if she knows about it.

I've seen a lot of K1 filers who refer to the Affidavit of Support (I-134) whenever they say AOS. So it depends on which form you are talking about.

08/20/08: TSC received N400

09/02/08: Received Biometrics Notification

09/18/08: Biometrics completed - Charlotte DO

10/24/08: Received Interview Letter

12/08/08: Interview @ 1:00pm. APPROVED!

01/05/09: Oath Ceremony 10:00AM. Now officially a USC!!!

01/17/09: Applied for US Passport and passport card

That is incorrect. AOS stands for Adjustment of Status. This happens when a non-USC comes to the United States on a visa (in most of our cases K1 or K3) and files to adjust their status to a permanent resident.

I-134 is simply an affidavit of support that the US citizen files to show they can support the intending immigrant. This is sent to the embassy for the interview.

Not sure about the language barriers. I would assume that his interview for K1 would be in portugese since the embassy is in Portugal, but he may want to start practicing English if he's going to be moving here.
