Hypothetical question: if someone has a loan taken out in their home country, can they still immigrate to the US and continue to pay it off without getting into legal trouble?

Generally yes. US Immigration likely won't know and does not care about the loan.

Although the specific laws of the country apply as well...for instance, some countries may not let you exit in some circumstances, and in some countries it can be a crime if one does not pay their loan in excess of a certain amount, which can then be an issue for immigration on criminal grounds (potential CIMT?). But these are pretty extreme cases, and I do not believe this applies to Canada anyway.

 

Things like unpaid spousal support and child support can also be an issue based on local laws again.
