The Big Bend Gazette, an excellent albeit liberal area newspaper, ran a story in its most recent (September) issue about how Flores was campaigning.  He took things seriously and was sincere.

 

This is "just" the state Senate, so it remains to be seen whether Trump supporters-vs.-haters will prevail in the national elections.

 

Incidentally, the most recent poll (this one taken of likely Texas voters) has Ted Cruz up by 9 points over Beto O'Rourke.  Previous polls had Cruz up only slightly and within poll margin of error.  In this recent poll, "undecided" likely voters were pressed to pick a candidate.

 

O'Rourke has out-fundraised Cruz substantially and is already all over the TV, and I've seen only a couple of Cruz yard-signs amidst a sea of O'Rourke signs.  The two have agreed to a series of upcoming debates, which should prove to be interesting.

Exactly, but of course downplayed or suppressed by the media.

 

He's a lightweight, capitalizing on his fresh face and the mistaken impression (not his doing, to be fair) that he's part Hispanic -- "Beto" is a nickname for "Roberto."  But his heritage is self-admittedly very Irish, "Beto" was his nickname since he was small, and he's never claimed to be Hispanic.

 

He wanted one of the three debates to be in Spanish (!!!?!).  Ted Cruz refused, chiefly because his own Spanish isn't as fluent as he would like.  However, at least the first debate* will be broadcast on an English station and simulcast on the Univision station, obviously with the use of Spanish interpretation.

Saw the first Cruz TV commercial today -- emphasizing his support for Hurricane Harvey relief and Beto's voting against 4 Congressional bills authorizing aid.  This is gonna be a slugfest.  We have to remember that Cruz was the last man standing against Trump at the end of the Presidential nomination process, so perhaps he'll have a chance.
