Still no SSN Card

Well, I applied for a SSN on March 10th. I wasn't in the SAVE-ASI system so they faxed in the manual verification to the Department of Homeland Security.

Today, 12 days later, DHS has still not verified me.

Has anyone had a similar experience?? They initially sai it'd be max 2 weeks, but today I was told to call back again next week. What exactly is DHS doing? I'd appreciate any insight here as I am starting to pull out my hair!

I have nothing helpful to tell you, except to say you may just have to keep waiting. We went into the office 3 weeks after James arrived here. Weren't in the SAVE system, were told the lady would check back everyday for a week and then just mail our thing to be verified. Long story short, James still has no SSN! and the RMV does not care that he's in the process of getting one, they won't let him start the license-getting process.

We needed a manual verification and we had to wait 5 weeks to get the card. I don't think there's anything you can do to speed it up, unfortunately

Well 5 weeks is better then what I was fearing.... I swear I heard somewhere that that can take 8 weeks, don't know if I am making that up though because I can't find where I read it...

Arrived in Alaska on 17th Feb ..waited 2 weeks as per hints in the "how to apply for an SSN number " on this site.

Went to the SS office ...the bloke there said I could find out my number 2 days later by returning in person and the actual card would take approx 2 weeks to arrive.

2 days later I trotted off to get the number ...just a sheet of official paper basically...The card arrived in just over a week !!!

Maybe it`s just up here in the snowy bit of the US ..who knows.

I`m sorry to hear you`ve had trouble with this ...It`s extra hassle you just don`t need! The whole immigration process in just one long nightmare for us mere mortals

When we were told we needed the manual verification, we were told it would take 8-10 weeks, so we were actually pleasantly surprised

We needed a manual verification and we had to wait 5 weeks to get the card. I don't think there's anything you can do to speed it up, unfortunately

I don't think SSA will do anything now until they hear from USCIS. Unfortunately, USCIS can be very slow at responding. When did you execute the K-1 visa? Claudeth was in the system after she had been here only two weeks. Good luck, I hope your wait is short!

Yes, mine was the only black spot on the immigration experience thus far, except for an RFE for cheques put in the wrong place. (They're #######, really.)

I went down to the SS office the day after my EAD showed up. I wasn't in the system so I was told to call back in ten days. I did so, they still didn't have me in the system. Thus began a runaround lasting from September 2005 to the end of January 2006. X( All because, guess what, they forgot to send the form off with a proper signature.

If you're concerned, here's what I can suggest:

1) Don't bother calling them. Half the time I got people who were completely %)!(&%!!! clueless, and the other half of the time I was told "We have no information."

2) Be diligent. Go down to the SS office armed with the procedures for SAVE. Mdyoung posted them to one of my questions about SSN information; do a search if you can.

3) *Go* in person. Ask if the appropriate forms are sent. Make sure that you get written verification, if you can, that these are being followed up on. Don't get lost in the system.

4) If you're waiting an unreasonably long time, request that SS bug DHS.

5) Talk to a supervisor if you feel you're being ignored/passed around/not certain of what's up. You have a right to know your status and what's going on.

I have heard of this happening only about a couple thousand times. LOL

If the SSA office sends the G-845, suggest that you go back to the SSA office no more than once a week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come

back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark "second request."

B. PROCEDURE – HOW TO REQUEST MANUAL VERIFICATION

STEP 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving

the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from

the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS

Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal

work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from

DHS.

Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS. Some SSA offices have an

arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up

contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated

“second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15

federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by

mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845

to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up

contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays

(again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work

days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from

DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the RO. Also report to the RO any trend that shows a

serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames. The RO will consult with central office.
