Hi friends, 

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this topic. 

Anyway, when I first received my GC in 2016, it did not occur to me to remove the restrictions from my Social Security card. "Valid for work only with DHS authorization"

 

So now my GC expires on 6/30, and my company's HR lady is asking about I-9. Since I don't know when I'll get my NOA, I want to make sure I have a back up, which is state ID and unrestricted social security card.

(I had to resend my I-751 due to a dumb mistake I made, and was delivered today, on 6/4. )

 

Will the Social Security department remove restrictions even if my GC expiration date is coming up soon?

This should be fine. I'm unsure if it applies to LPRs as well (vs having no limit), but in general you only need 14 days of legal status remaining.

Yay, planning on going tomorrow! Hopefully they don't give me the runaround, like I've read on other threads. 

Silly question but, do you know if I need to show them my physical card, or is my Alien number enough?

I also read on another closed thread on visajourney to not give them your social security card (to say you lost it or forgot it at home). 

 

What would you suggest?

I absolutely would not suggest lying that it was lost. But I would bring it anyway...having a card already is not an issue for issuing a new one due to a change in conditions.

In fact, whether you have the card would not impact whether a new one would have that text on it. That is determined based on immigration status / authorization to work alone.

Hiii, just got back from Social Security office. 

Everything breezy. They didn't ask for my current SS card, just the green card.

Took probably less than 5 minutes (actual wait was about 2 hours) , and new unrestricted SS card will be mailed within 2 weeks :)
