My fiance was told that it is recommended that i be there for his interview although not necessary, I am so worried this will hurt his application.

I don't have the money to travel back and forth. I live in New York.

Is it really necessary for me to be there?

Not necessary and depends a lot on how much face time you 2 have

but if you can not afford to travel how do you expect to afford the fees that follow ?

AOS is well over $1200,  the airfare to bring her,  geting her health insurance /  this is not a cheap process

No, it's not required. If you have sufficient relationship evidence, then it's not necessary. If you are short on relationship evidence (especially if you have red flags), then being there can help.

It is not necessary, but it will help if you are lack of relationship evidence. My fiance and I meet just once before we filed our petition (I know 1 visit is too short). Instead of doing 2nd visit while waiting for our NOA2, I suggested to him that I want him to be there during the interview since we just have one visit. He agreed with that, and I believe that by having him there with me, it really helps me a lot. Furthermore, we have more relationship evidence since he came. If you believe that you have lots of relationship evidence (especially time spend in person), it is okay for you to not be there.

I had my interview in Santo Domingo and let me tell you it helps for petitioner to be there. But in your situation it is different just make sure your fiancé is prepared to the fullest with evidence. You not being there is already going to lead them to ask maybe a few extra questions about you.
