Hi everyone :)

Has anyone had to use these guys before for a background check? I'm currently going through the motions with them now and to be quite honest they seem pretty useless....

They keep asking me for 'work certificates' which aren't a thing in New Zealand! I've had to call them 4 times now to explain this  <_<

Work certificate is probably the most common piece of information any background check companies will try to obtain from prospective candidates.

The work certificate should contain your start date and end date from the companies you’ve worked at, which should be able to obtain by emailing HR from your previous companies in New Zealand.

This should be a standard document which most HR department have on file.

I provided them with a contract from my last employer which has my start date but like I said it's not really a thing in NZ. If they aren't happy with that then they can call the companies themselves otherwise what are they being paid for??

Most reference checks require your start and end date stated in your company record to match the ones you’ve stated in your resume. Having a start date on the initial contract doesn’t show how long you’ve worked in the role.

Most background check companies would rely on the documents provided from the candidates instead of trying to contact the companies.

It’s quite okay if you’re not able to provide them with the documents, I’ve seen candidates who didn’t provide certain documents for various reasons and most likely they would continue to the next stage of the background check but marked down which documents are missing.

So then it depends on whether the employer really wants to hire that candidate and accept the check with missing documents. If not, they can cancel the contract and offer, stop the onboarding process. Not saying this is always the case. It’s entirely up to you what to provide.

I have had the misfortune of dealing with them several times over the last couple years. They are pretty useless - I also intially thought the background checking company was actually hired to do the background checking, lol. In the end it was up to me to educate them on what documents actually exist; provide them the available information etc.

They always backed down when something was not actually obtainable.
