Yeah, school campuses, malls, courthouses, police stations, etc. What a stupid idea.

Not such a stupid idea - several years ago a maniac rammed his truck into a restaurant, got out shooting and killed 21 (I believe) people - at least three patrons inside at the time held concealed weapon permits but because the establishment didn't permit handguns - they were powerless to stop the killing because their weapons were outside in their cars... it's not stupid if you or someone you love is in harm's way..

How about we take the gun away from the maniac instead?

Go ahead! Take that gun from that maniac! If you need some help...just call me on my cell. I'll zoom over as fast as I can. ;)

Sorry, I don't work in law enforcement.

And law enforcement cannot be there quickly enough to take away the maniac's gun before he harms someone.

Then don't let maniacs have guns.

I think that being able to carry a concealed weapon everywhere is a great idea. If some creep threatens me with a knife, I want to be able to point my gun at him. We all have the right to protect ourselves, no matter where we are - at the mall, in the park or at school.

So just hand out guns to everyone. Yeah, that will work.

I have to say that as cynical as I might be - I can't imagine that what you just described constitutes a typical "Texas experience", and you're probably far far more likely to be hit by a truck crossing the street than you are to be gunned down by a maniac who just rammed his car through a restaurant. Seems to me more ought to be done about relatively predictable (and prolific) causes of death, rather than spending all this time and effort 'arming up' to deal with weird off-the-wall stuff.

yeah yeah, we know your thoughts on concealed carry. and i've yet to see anyone post any statistics showing those with concealed carry permits are reckless and commit crimes.

Maybe it's the availability of guns that's the problem?

I'm not sure I've suggested anything to that effect. I think the broad availability of firearms is a big part of the national problem. Whether or not people carrying the guns are law abiding or not is irrelevant.

Bwaahahahaha!

Oh that's a fabulous idea. No, really. let me go a few steps further:

Let's give each and every kid here in the States a handgun by their fifth birthday. We'll teach them to shoot, then send them to school with it so that they can defend themselves from other kids with guns. At college, they will be comparing their weapons side by side in the library and Friday night will be spent shooting bullets into targets instead of going out, to prepare for the next time we're all on "High Alert".

Oh COME ON people, this is INSANE! I won't even allow a bloody gun in my house. You can't have them in England unless you're a member of a gun club, and then they get kept...at the gun club! You know what? If there weren't so many morons able to carry a weapon as a "constitutional right", normal people wouldn't have to have the horrible things in their possession to defend themselves against the crazy people, would they?

Let's get real - gun laws in the United States are ridiculously lax. They are. In NO OTHER country in the world do teenagers regularly march into school in PEACE TIME and shoot the ####### out of their fellow students and teachers. I mean NOWHERE. Apparently, the United States is NOT at civil war, we are NOT about to be attacked by aliens and let's be honest, if there was going to be a terrorist attack, do you honestly think Farmer John would be able to protect us all from the naughty people with his twelve bore? No way. Especially not if it's germ warfare.

Besides, I think the entire country is being blatantly manipulated by these levels of alert. Whatever happened to the land of the brave and the free? Oh hold on - no - that's it - free for anyone to carry a weapon that could accidentally be used by their six year old to blow his little friend's arm off when Daddy or Mommy are not looking.

The politician mentioned in the OP's post is completely nuts. Nobody, but NOBODY is going to convince me that each and every person should own a weapon when as a society, we clearly can't handle the ones we already have. I sincerely believe the constitution was drawn up for a reason, NOT to allow people in centuries to come to manipulate it so that they can wield an object of power for "protection". Get some protection by mending the reasons why people seem to feel the need to so prolifically shoot each other in the first place.

I don't know. Perhaps it's the aftermath of having a childhood friend shoot himself in the face with a shotgun that has me thinking this way, or maybe it's the time a friend brought a friend into our house, who brought another friend we didn't know, who brought a big fat handgun. Turns out he had that on him as a "concealed weapon", drew it on my husband in our basement and threatened to kill him. High as a kite, he was - and completely psycho to boot (and I say that with the full knowledge that I am a Psychology major! :P). I found out at 4am and got SO MAD that I shouted the high-as-a-kite psycho dude straight out of my back door and on to the street.

A couple of months ago the dude was picked up for threatening to kill a friend of mines daughter. He's in jail now awaiting a trial - the same place he sat in his teens for several years after plotting to shoot his father after school one day...thank God someone told his Dad first.

Anyway I digress. Guns are for wars, wars are terrible things and I just hate what guns and wars do to people. Bah. Those are my rather long "two cents". :(

This is quite interesting:

Asked about carrying a pistol into a bar, Perry said, "I think that a person ought to be able to carry that weapon if they are legally licensed to."

The governor responded less clearly when asked whether Texas should submit mental health information on some individuals to a national database used for background checks.

Seung-Hui Cho, the shooter who killed 32 people and himself at Virginia Tech on April 16, had purchased two handguns, despite having been declared mentally ill.

Senate Bill 1755 by Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, which hasn't yet been heard by a Senate committee, would cover people who have received court-ordered inpatient mental health services or who have been declared mentally incapacitated. But it wouldn't apply to people like Cho, who was a mental health outpatient.

There are privacy requirements under federal law that must be considered, Perry said.

So he endorses taking guns into bars.... I wonder if he endorses drink driving too
