My wife and son went through the interview process yesterday and everything was fine. At the end of the interview, the VO kept their passports and told my wife that he needed my 2017 IRS tax return which I have not filed yet. He gave her a white 221g with a red underline at the IRS tax return statement and wrote 2017. He gave just one 221g for my wife and not my sone. I am ok with that, I will file it today and send it over to my wife and she can courier it to the embassy.  The VO also told her that he will finish the case processing once he has that document. The weird thing is that after a few hours of the interview I got an email from IslamabadIVinquiry@state.gov which has a questionnaire (total of 10 questions). My concern is: is this email real? What do they need? The tax return or this questionnaire?

They need both. The tax return and they want you to answer the questionnaire.

Actually, I'm not sure why they are asking for 2017 tax return since it is not yet filed. The dateline is in April, so, usually, people will wait until March or April to file/submit it. Did your wife mention that you not yet filed 2017 tax to the consulate officer?

No, she didn't mention anything like that. The thing is I moved back to the US mid-2017 and did not have any older IRS tax returns because my income abroad was under the filing limit. So there were no previous tax returns; which may have made the VO want the 2017 tax return. However, I have got it done today.

Do I send the original 221g white slip along with the tax return document?

No, I was working in Pakistan and my yearly salary was below the filing limit. So when I had to send the NVC bundle I sent a letter explaining the situation that during 2016-15 I was working abroad and my income was below the filing limit and hence the tax return was unavailable and that I moved to the US at XX date and attached a proof of employment letter from my HR along with recent paystubs.

The other thing that I was wondering was that the VO kept their passports and said when he has the tax return he will finish the process.  He also mentioned that they will send an email, which I assumed would be the 221g mentioning the tax return. But it's a questionnaire (10 questions) about more information related to my wife i.e. addresses, phone numbers, siblings, emails IDs, social media handles etc.

How long does this take? Anyone have any experience with it?

The thing is that the email is not a DS-5535 form. It is not labeled as a DS-5535. It is a simple text email asking for additional information same as a DS-5535.

Is this a new version of the DS-5535 policy or something totally new?

Hello,

how are you? Can you please tell me , When did you apply (which month) ? When did you receive your na2 ? Your service Center and how many years tax you submitted?

I applied in Jan 2017. What is the NA2?

Submit tax returns for 2017 only.
