which is faster? k-1 or k-3

I'm planning on returning to the philippines to see my sweetheart and we haven't been conclusive on what would be better or/and faster..for me to marry her there or just have an engagement ceremony there. any thoughts on this?

I had the same decision to make when I went to Tanzania last time. I think that the K1 might be a BIT faster because you only have to file the I-129F, whereas with the K3 you have to file the I-130 too.

However, now I'm kind of wishing that we had gotten married there. If you do the K3, you can apply for AOS as soon as your fiance gets to America, which means she'll be able to work (get out of the house!) sooner. If you're not strapped for cash like me though, that might not be as much as a factor.

You could have an engagement ceremony and then come back to the states and file for the K-1 it is faster. I have some some cases where the K-3 was about the same time as the K-1. But overall the K-1 is faster. they say normally it supposed to take anywhere from 6-9 months. But in some cases its longer like in mine case its been almost 1 year. But my fiance is from Cairo which is a high fraud Embassy. But every case is differnent some take longer than other. I wish you all the best no matter what your decision is. :)

9/24/2006----I emailed the Embassy reguarding my fiance's packet 3.

10/17/2006--Cairo sent packet 3 for the second time to my fiance. First one was never recieved.

10/19/2006--Packet 3 recieved.

12/20/2006--Packet 3 sent.

12/21/2006--Cairo Embassy recieved packet 3.

2/21/2007---Packet 4 recieved.

3/12/2007---Interview (He Passed)!

3/12/2007---Administrative Processing begins.............God please help me get through this!

7/17/2007---Our 2 Year Anniversay!!!

10/23/2007--7 months and 2 weeks of A/P and still waiting..........God help me!

4/22/2008---2nd Interview ( keep us in your prayers)

4/22/2008--He was approved for the Visa 2-3 weeks until he recieves it in the mail lets hope so!!

6/03/2008--VISA IN HAND! Thank you god!

7/03/2008--Our Wedding Day!

We chose K1 cause its faster than K3....we dont want to waste time to spend waiting and waiting we rather want to be in each others arms real soon!

08/31/11 - package sent to CSC
09/02/11 - package delivered(Labor day weekend)
09/07/11 - check cashed
09/21/11 - requested NOA replacement
09/29/11 - received replacement of NOA(no NOA date)
02/03/12 - email received card production ordered!!!
02/09/12 - GC received
N-400 Time line
09/05/12 - package sent to Phoenix AZ
09/07/12 - package received
09/10/12 - NOA sent
09/11/12 - check cashed, email and text received
09/13/12 - biometrics sent
09/14/12 - received NOA(took 4 days to received!!!)

As far as the part about being able to work sooner, I think money is not the only issue. For many of those coming here on a K-1 spending time alone all day while thier spouse works and not being able to keep busy can start feelings of lonliness that can trasfer in their minds to the idea that they miss thier home. When someone can work it can give them a sense of value that helps their transition and can keep thier mind occupied which is a good thing too.

AJ, your signature is blank after the interview. What happened?

12/14/2006 Applied for K-1 with request for Waver for Multiple filings within 2 years.
Waiting - Waiting - Waiting
3/6 Called NVC file sent to Washington for "Administrative Review" Told to call back every few weeks. 7/6 Called NVC, A/R is finished, case on way to Moscow. YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7/13 On Friday the 13th we see updated Moscow website with our interview on 9/11 (Hope we are not supersticious) 9/11 Visa Approved. Yahoo.
10/12 Tickets for her to America. I am flying to JFK to meet her there. 12/15/07 We are married. One year and a day after filling original K-1
12/27 Filed for AOS, EAD & AP 1/3 Received all three NOA-1's 1/22 Biometrics 2/27 EAD & AP received 4/12 Interview
5/19/08 RFE for physical that she should not have needed. 5/28 New physical ($ 250.00 wasted) 6/23 Green Card received
4/22/10 Filed for Removal of Contitions. 6/25 10 Year Green Card received Nov, 2014 Citizenship ceremony. Our journey is complete.

I would suggest (if someone else hasn't already) to read the Guides at the top of this website. Check timelines from others who have filed either the K1 or the K3 from the same consulate as your fiancé will go through. You can get an idea from that. Can't give exact time frame as each petition is processed individually and through different service centers.
