Dual Citizenship application while US Passport application is on Process.

Good day peeps!

My oath taking for US Naturalization is next week and planning to apply US passport same day since my oath taking is in the morning. Then, the week after next, I was planning to go to Chicago to apply for my Dual Citizenship. With the requirements in the PH Embassy website, US passport was mentioned but not clear if  they need both US Naturalization cert AND US Passport or, it's either or?

So anyone here tried applying for the Dual Citizenship while their US Passport is on process?

One possible hiccup: You'll probably need to submit the original certificate of naturalization to get your passport (Joan did). You receive them both separately in the mail within a day or two of each other. You'll have to wait until one or both are returned/sent to you to apply for dual. Congrats on your upcoming oath! It is a great day...enjoy!

(FWIW It seems to make sense to get the passport book for international travel, but also the passport card that can be carried and used on a day to day basis for ID/proof of US Citizenship and land travel to and/from Canada or Mexico)

Thanks Steve! Then I may need to hold off with the dual citizenship. :( I was also planning to the both passport book and card. :) Saves $25 for processing fee if I am not mistaken lol.

Also, when she applied for dual citizenship , did they have to keep her Naturalization certificate then sent back? I was planning to apply for the PH passport too since I  will be there anyway.

My pleasure. Hate to you waste a trip! The fee for both was somewhat cheaper than each individually (combined), but I forgot what the difference was. The passport card makes so much sense that I might get one too when it is time to renew my passport.

We have not crossed that bridge yet. However, this is form the Philippine Consulate Honolulu website:

Application for reacquisition of Philippine citizenship

REQUIREMENTS:

Submit the original and one duplicate copy of the following required documents to apply for reacquisition of Philippine citizenship:

  1. One (1) original and one (1) photocopy of the duly-accomplished Dual Citizenship application form, typed or printed legibly in black or blue ink
  2. Original and Copy of Philippine Birth Certificate issued by the National Statistics Office (NSO) / Philippine Statistics Authority (original to be presented before the oath taking, when applying by mail)
  3. Copies of Philippine and U.S. Passports (originals to be presented before the oath taking, when applying by mail)
  4. Copy of Marriage Certificate/Contract, for married women (original to be presented before the oath taking, when applying by mail)
  5. Copy of U.S. Naturalization Certificate (original to be presented before the oath taking, when applying by mail)
  6. Four (4) colored photos, 2” x 2”, taken within six months before the date of application, showing a clear front view of applicant’s face, with a white background. No sleeveless attire. Blurred or low quality photos are not accepted.
  7. Processing fee of $50.00 (non-refundable), payable in cash or money order made payable to "Embassy of the Philippines" (or "Philippine Consulate General", if application is made at one of the Philippine Consulates General in the U.S.). Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

Note: The Philippine Embassy/Consulate General assumes no responsibility for any delay or loss in the mail, or while the documents are in the custody of the courier service. The applicant should note the tracking numbers of all envelopes used and submitted.

Looks like you send copies of all important documents if mailing and bring the originals and copies if you are going to the consulate in person.

Have a BLAST next week and treat yourself and family/friends to dinner afterwards--It IS that important. It was amazing for me to watch Joan go through it and one of my favorite photos of her (I am a photographer, so I have a LOT of photos of her) is of her holding the small flag they give you before the ceremony! My heartfelt congratulations to you.

You have to complete the oath in person (and that is when they want to see the originals), you mail the application and copies in initially, the fee$$$$$$ of course ;)

My wife did the dual while here in the Phils, what a PITA ... much easier/quicker doing it in the USA, and going to the consulate or waiting for an outreach event.
