Hello:

I want to ask if a green card holder does qualify for unemployment or not? Im asking for a friend who lives in Ohio.

Is unemployment considered a public charge? Does the sponsor have to provide assistance if the immigrant couldnt find a job?

Thanks

Ok so just to make sure. The immigrant just came to the US and went ro unemployment office to put his/her name to look for job and they offered him $150 dollars a week if he cant find a job.

That wont be a problem later for citizenship and that is not considerate a public charge?

Thanks in advance.

hi

unemployment is usually given after you have worked for a time and been laid off for example, you have been paying taxes and having money taken out of your paycheck

unless this is a special program, I don't really know, but I don't believe the petitioner and sponsor would be liable for this unemployment fund

it will be temporary, and as long as he is really looking for a job

it's never easy to find employment and it depends on the type of skills and education you have. he should be applying at temp agencies as well

and he or she won't have a problem for citizenship, by the time he is eligible, he will be working

Qualification for unemployment compensation varies by state.  Guest workers do not generally qualify although in some cases TN visa holders do. Citizens and green card holders do qualify. People who have been working under the table are not eligible. Household workers in my state working for a properly registered family employer are qualified; I pay unemployment insurance premiums quarterly for my home health assistant.

You do not get unemployment unless you have qualifying period of employment and have lost the job through no fault of your own. As soon as a person receives a termination notice, their next stop should be the unemployment office. Severance pay is taken into consideration. There are job search requirements as well. The period to receive payments is limited as well.

The state's Department of Labor (or equivalent) website should have links to complete information.
