Hi,

Filipino naturalized to US citizen but thinking about filing for dual citizenship. I've read the advantages and disadvantages of having dual citizenship, but I don't really know if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages (or vice versa), so I wanted to ask you guys -- is dual citizenship even worth it?

I'm pretty much established in the US with a job and a home, nothing really ties me to the Philippines except for visiting the rest of my family on occasion. I'm not really that active in voting or Philippine politics. My dad insists I should apply for dual citizenship, if only at least for "identification" purposes (he is a fan of having as much IDs as you can).

I've traveled to the Philippines with my US passport and after customs took a look at my expired PH passport they waived the fees I need to pay.

Just wanted to see if anyone has had dual citizenship worked out well for them. What are your thoughts?

You can visit your family in the Philippines as a "balikbayan" which allows you to stay in PI for a year.  I don't see any benefits to having the Philippine passport again, unless you're looking into retiring to the Philippines when you're older and/or you want to buy properties in the Philippines.

Don't vote, don't want to own a bunch of land?  Not having children that you want to be dual citizens?   Not many perks after that ....

Even if you wanted to live in the Philippines, without having to use the Balikbayan privilege, you can acquire the SRRVisa as a past Philippine citizen and have most of the perks like stay more than a year, no ECC fees and so forth.

And you get another ID CARD with the SRRVisa!!

For former citizens it is $1,500 ... and you can get that back to use if you invest in property (condo)  ;)
