It might.  The fact that some of the officers standing behind him laughed and applauded when he said that won't help public morale, either.

I truly hope he comes to realize that while freedom of speech is a wonderful thing, but when you are speaking as POTUS words have consequences because they can set off actions---good and bad.  People see the President say or do something and think "well he made it ok to do that/say that" because as President he is supposed to represent the nation's cores and values.

There are some things he's put into effect that are a good thing, and some stuff I don't necessarily agree with.  Most of what he says I cannot agree with, not because of the substance of what he is speaking about---but because of how he comes across when saying it, and the wording he uses.  Trump always talked about how he's "not a politician".  When you are President you do have to sound like one, though, when speaking as the representative of all people in the United States, and choose your words a bit more carefully.  And there are plenty of instances where he has said something derogatory or distasteful.

I hope Trump does succeed in doing great things for the US people.  I really do.  To want Trump to fail (even if I don't support him wholeheartedly) is to want America to fail as a country.

So far, personally, I haven't seen much coming out of this administration that leads me to believe he will leave office with a good approval rating and I would be very surprised if he got another 4 years just based on some of the stuff that comes out of his mouth.   He digs his own grave, in that aspect.

I don't want failure, but responsibility would be good

He's got a bit of a problem with that, because everything that happens presently as a result of what he sees/does/says is somehow Obama's fault or the Democrats fault or another country's fault or Hillary's fault.  His supporters tend to have this same outlook.

I agree...taking responsibility and being more humble would do him a world of good in gaining respect.  Not just respect from people, but from other countries too since America is supposed to be a global powerhouse.  The respect from other countries (and even some US allies) has diminished, which is a shame.

What respect?

Didn't the US have at least a bit more respect under Obama?  I mean at least other world leaders respected Obama as the US figurehead and President.....unlike at the summit where Trump was giving one of his "put America first" speeches and it shows on the live broadcast other world leaders glancing at each other and snickering.

Which brings me to a question....Trump made a big deal during his campaign about "America First.  America First.  America First."  That mindset wasn't there in the White House beforehand, perhaps it should have been---but not at the expense of world-relations with the way Trump pushes the mindset, seeming to think every country should view him as an honored King...and vocally upset when they don't.  Remember the whole "Toyota must start producing/making their vehicles only in the USA!!!!!  Or else pay hefty fines!!!!!  They better listen to what I say!!!" (paraphrased)  Uhm...did no one inform him that Toyota is a Japanese company?  When he was going on and on and on about the wall Mexico was supposedly going to forced to pay for....did no one inform him that he cannot force another country to pay for something built in the US, much less something that wasn't even their idea in the first place?  The whole notion of "oh they'll pay for it in tariffs and taxes, etc"....  The only payment going towards any wall is coming straight out of US taxpayers.

Putting America first is a great idea.  Every country should believe in taking care of their people first.  Trump may not realize his own words are having an effect on his superior negotiating skills, since he's driving other countries to forget about America's needs...because he's constantly promoted America should be more selfish and self-serving at the expense of other countries and allies from the get-go.  Like I said earlier---how he says something as President, and how he acts certainly can have consequences.

Like Putin? Duterte? Respect for Obama?

The only people that seemed to respect Obama were the small handful of refugee-fetish globalist leaders intent on destroying their own country.

Not great company.

Obama was a good orator. That's it. His leadership qualities sucked. Like Trump he knew how to market to his demographic. Of course, by the end of his 8 years most of the rust belt people that voted for him were fed up of him.

I think you're under the impression that Trump is this bad because of the media's excessively negative attention toward him, combined with excessively positive attention toward Obama. Nowadays we're forced to think for ourselves rather than through the media due to their fake anonymously sourced news that should, for all intents and purposes, be considered libel.

In his defense, Trump did promise four more years of incompetence.

true...the comparison between the two happens a lot.

I still think a lot of it he does to himself, though.  He gives the media fodder.

Trump's personal flaws are on exhibit for sure.

I think if the left were a lot more rational about their criticism of him, instead of this personal trait attack mode (and finding things to get offended by, case in point, this thread), they'd find a lot more people willing to agree with them.

But life isn't about what could have been, it's about what is.. the left prefer to be irrational, and cater to Trump's agenda of making himself look Presidential by showing how crazy the left are, and it's a very successful marketing plan.

The same can be said about the right, though...if they were more rational in why they support him instead of resorting to the usual "You're not a real American! Go back where you came from!! If you don't like my President get the hell out of this country!!!! You must be a (insert race/religion)-lover!!!!" tirade the moment someone says even anything remotely critical or questioning his policy and platform, they'd find a lot more willing to see their side of things too.

lol I don't think so...I've seen a lot of people either on the news (no, not just CNN) and social media as well as public gatherings and rallies saying those very words to people even born in this country.  "You're not a real American!  Go back where you came from!"  Usually when the person responds that this IS their country...then they are faced with a retort somewhat like "Well you're not a TRUE American then if you don't support the President".

Recently a Florida mayoral candidate (who claims himself as a Trump supporter) literally told audience members at a debate to "go back to Africa then" because they voiced their concern about his support of some of the more controversial policies.
