POE With Dog

I am awaiting my IR-1 interview in Montreal. Assuming (hoping) my visa is approved, I would be crossing POE via driving. I have a large dog that will be moving with me. I understand that, when activating an IR-1, you are typically brought in for secondary screening. What am I supposed to do with my dog during that time? If I am crossing in August/September, it would be far too hot to leave him in the car for an indefinite amount of time.

Would the dog come with you?  I know the dog's papers need to be inspected but does the dog itself?

I would not leave my dog in a car for any amount of time, I would make that clear to the agents and perhaps they will allow you to bring your dog into secondary with you.  I have seen dogs in secondary many times.

Good luck

Thank you for your insight, canadian_wife -- I had never seen a dog in secondary, so wasn't sure if they are allowed, but I feel very relieved that you have seen dogs in secondary. I share your sentiment that I absolutely never leave my dog in the car, for any amount of time, which is why I was so concerned about what I would do with him during secondary screening.

As for whether he needs to be inspected -- I have crossed the border with my dog many times (although this will obviously be my first time immigrating with him). Either way, the rules for dogs are generally the same, from what I can gather through research: dogs are required to have received a rabies vaccine at least 30 days prior to entering the U.S., and must be accompanied by a vaccine certificate that is signed the administering veterinarian, states the brand of vaccine administered and includes a physical description of the dog (color, gender, etc.). I live right near the Canada/U.S. border and my vet's office has a specific type of certificate that is given for dogs who will be crossing the border.

The dog is also subject to additional screening if there are concerns regarding their health, etc., and can be denied entry if they are believed to be in poor health. I have heard that some people get a signed letter from their vet stating that the dog has been recently examined and is in good health.

Thanks again for your help, canadian_wife!

They won't allow the dog to go inside. I know where I crossed they had a garage I was able to park in. My dog and bird were in the car but the bird needed to be looked at so that is probably why they let the car in the garage. I would ask if they have a spot out of the heat.

They won't even look at the dogs papers, heck they almost sent us through because everyone forgot about the bird. (I told them when we first entered that the Vet was meeting us). The guy came running out after us when the vet showed up :)

Just wanted to chime in that when we crossed they allowed us to bring our dog inside. In fact, they may have even told us to, because it was assumed we wouldn't be leaving her in the car for such a long period of time. All the officers came and petted her and gave her treats. :)

I'd suggest asking to bring your dog with you, and if that's a no for some reason, then definitely make sure they're in a safe, cool, shaded area.
