So i guess vietnam does not let it's citizens change the passports to the married names from what i've heard because i want my wife to have my last name but realized that i've already sent documents in the i-130 and nvc documents i know that you dont need to change the last name to married name. but on our marriage certificates it just show that we got married but it doesn't really change our name on the marriage certifate because it show's she still has her last name. any advice worst to come i would have to file I-90 and then file for new SS# in my last name for the name change.

There is a place in her passport for the name change notation. However once you are state side you will need to petition the court in your jurisdiction for a legal name change. The only way the Viet Embassy will make the notation in her passport.

I can only tell you how it worked in our case.....

1. Petition the court/Pay court fee

2. Place an add in local paper announcing name change

3. Wife appears in court and gets name changed officially

4. Visit Viet Embassy or mail court documentation and passport so name can be added to the passport

If you already changed name for green card she will most likely have to carry marriage license documentation with her when she travels.

We changed her name by just adding mine to her old name so easy for anyone with a few brain cells to see ahh she got married.

No you can't change the name in Vietnam that I am aware of.

Problem is the marriage license doesn't state a name change.

As as I said to get the passport name change noted needs to be done in US.

Alright i didn't know we could go through a civil court to get it changed because she's a immigrant and when you got the court order did you use it for the green card, social security card and drivers license?

Changed everything but green card. Will change green card when we remove conditions so everything will line up.

Yes - there is a spot for previous name and present name.

Since we have name change court documentation no reason not to honor it.

i also heard that my wife could also get a new passport changed to her married name so when she goes for the interview all documents and green card would be used with the name in the new passport. but i'm weary because we submitted documents to the nvc and i dont want to bring a new passport and them question us about it.

I'll just add a note that you can change your name without going through the court process even if you don't show a name change in your marriage certificate - at least in the US. I know because I did it.

Not sure about Vietnam passport though.

so i can change without a court order ? did you file with i-90 and send in evidence such as your marriage certificate for a name change?

I haven't filed an I-90, just I-751.

I was referring specifically to changing my name in SSA, DL, credit cards, etc.

Just used my marriage certificate with my maiden name.

ETA: my husband also changed his name using the same process.
