How could it not matter what was said?  If Sessions met Kysliak and discussed US Senate matters then there is no issue.  If Sessions discussed something to do with the  Trump campaign he is a liar, or worse.

But he recused himself regardless, so it is a moot point.  We don't know what Bill and Loretta discussed either, but again, it doesn't matter as the appearance should have been enough to get her to recuse herself.  I realize that the standard of ethics are different for the Left and the Right, but they shouldn't be.

No I am not missing the point

Friendship or acquaintance alone is not a reason for recuse, you need something specific to recuse your self from.  A potential or perception of conflict of interest.  Bill Clinton screwed up when he "bumped into" Loretta Lynch and it cost his wife the election.  Even taking them at their word, recusal  was the right step for Lynch.

And why did Sessions recuse himself?  Not because Trump is his friend,as far as we know the President is not under investigation.

How many judges recuse themselves if they personally know (are close friends with, or accept donations from) a defendant.  You are right, recusal was the right step for Lynch and she didn't do it bringing her ethics into question.

And sessions refused himself after his contact(s) with Kysliak were published,  not when he knew of the potential conflict

In this you have no idea what his plans were from the start.

It absolutely is a reason to recuse yourself. Being a friend or close acquaintance of someone creates a bias in their favor therefore a conflict of interest. Any judge or prosecutor who is not corrupt would recuse themself from a case involving a friend of theirs. This is just common sense.
