Hi All,

Quick question. I have my OPT commencing in August 2017 through 2018.

Although my passport expires May 2018.

Any word of how this works? Obviously, OPT is an extension of my F-1 Status, but when I get a new passport, do I need to do anything about my visa? or do I not "give up" my passport?

For informations sake. It isa British passport, and I can get it renewed while here in the USA.

Thank you in advance.

Will your embassy or consulate here take your old passport to give you a new one.?

If they don't, once you get your new passport, you can travel back to US on F1 visa on your old passport while carrying your new passport as long as the visa has not expired, if that's wat you are asking. To be able to return back to US on F1 visa on OPT, you have to have employment letter.

If you are worried about status while in US, no worries, your F1 visa expiry has no meaning anyway. Your OPT status and expiry will define your status.

If they do take my passport, I will have my i20, and my EAD card, but not the actual visa page.... is this a problem?

or just carry the paperwork itself and it should all be fine?

Within US, your i-20 and OPT card will be good for your legal status. If they take your old passport and you plan to travel outside and come back during OPT, you will need a new F1 visa.

You should ask your University about the requirements for travelling outside the U.S. on an OPT.

I traveled on an OPT many times from 2012-2014 and the requirements to enter the U.S. were to show your F-1 visa, a valid passport, current I-20, I-94, EAD card and letter from my employer. My passport with the F-1 visa also expired and had to obtain a new passport. The Consulate from my country returned my old passport and placed a CANCELLATION stamp at the front page. From there I had to travel with both passports.

I'm sure your country will return your old passport, other wise you should request it and explain that it holds your F-1 visa that is still valid.

Hope this helps.
