As per  my experience, my 2 kids and I were made to write over the line of name, the new name we want, on a sheet of paper, w/c , I realized later was the naturalization certificate , prior to our oath taking.

After the oath taking, the certificate of naturalization came back to us with exactly the name we wrote on it, including the letters I crossed out.

So no need to worry with change of name as it can be done prior to the oath taking as a US citizen, unless things have changed.

Any other opinion / experience will be most welcome.

You will need a court order from your state court.

when one takes the oath of citizenship, it is usually done before a judge,or someone with such power, which makes the change of name, court ordered.

the naturalization certificate where we wrote our name change, including the crossed out error, came back to us with the proper seal and signature of the Commisioner of immigation and naturalization.

if you had a different experience, then it wasn't what  we had.
