So California is going to do away with 'Don't ask, don't tell'?

The California government may soon employ openly Communist people in its ranks.

The state assembly passed a bill Monday that would repeal a policy that had made being a member of the Communist Party a fireable offense. The legislation was supported along party lines with most Republicans opposing it while Democrats mainly favored the policy.

It would overturn a bill was signed into law during the Red Scare of the 1940s and 1950s when Americans worried Russian spies were trying to take over the country.

The bill now heads to the state Senate. If passed and signed, employees who are members of organizations that wish to overthrow a government could still be terminated.

It's an archaic policy which I don't understand the purpose of today.

While I agree wholeheartedly with firing someone who is part of an organization that wish to overthrow a government, while working for that same government they wish to overthrow, it seems to me more like this policy has a net effect of trying to forcefully keep people in the Democratic or Republican parties. In this case, more namely, the Democratic Party.

Note all the efforts made by the two major parties to keep as many third parties and independents off the ballot, and away from national debates, as possible. I don't see this as a much different sort of effort. The Red Scare days are over.

In all fairness, political affiliation has never been used as a reason to fire anyone.

I wouldn't think so, but apparently they have one of those obscure laws on the books.

I thought that was a requirement in CA?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
