I think it is time the constitution meets the 21st century.

No, it isn't. The constitution is just fine thanks.

based on opinion or what?

Based on understanding the constitution. Perhaps you should read it some time. The constitution is one of the greatest things about America. Those who are so willing to discard it or call it old fashioned are idiots at best, traitors at worse.

I never said discard it but it needs to be modernized to reflect the 21st century. Like banning racism rather than allowing it under free speech. Or banning any activities which have a negative influence on society, rather than allowing them under free speech. Anyone against that needs to travel more to other developed countries to see the positive results of such measures to a society. Maybe even learn something from them.

Right to bear arms is a great amendment but I believe it should only apply in your house; Not while sitting at a children's playground or in any public area for that matter. Someone who is mentally instable or a criminal should automatically forfeit any right to bear arms, period.

Stubbornness and ignorance has in always led to the downfall of every great nation, maybe you should read up on history. Even China, a communist country, seems to be more willing to adapt and change than some people in the US.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

It's time for sock puppet theatre!

Puppet 1: Hurray! What sorts of bad speech should we ban?

Puppet 2: I vote we start with the hateful rhetoric of the Christianist right. Oh, that's probably not what you meant.

Puppet 1: It's not hate speech if you take God's name in vain first!

Puppet 2: I vote we start with the racist rhetoric surrouding illegal immigration! Oh, dear. You probably didn't mean that either.

Puppet 1: Silly puppet, that's the GOOD kind of racism.

Puppet 2: I thought conservatives were for small government and independence.

Puppet 1: Just small enough to fit in the bedroom, but big enough to start stupid wars!

Puppet 2: What sort of penalties are we proposing? I think we should allow me to hit people for saying idiotic things. Wouldn't improve the republic, but it sure would be fun!

You know, I'm going to say that all things considered, the U.S. is pretty damn kickass, and deciding that we need to amend the Constitution to get rid of free speech because of... illegal immigration is somewhere beyond throwing the baby out with the bathwater and somewhere closer to drowning the baby and setting it on fire and saying 'HAHA silly bathwater I pwn you with the magic of heat.'

Infidel, the constitution is all about limiting the power of government over the people, something that is necessary all the more these days. It doesn't need changing, it needs upholding.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

And I'm guessing you are voting yourself judge, jury, and executioner when it comes to determining what is "a negative influence".

I suggest that you go live in one of those "other countries" that you are talking about.

Actually I will be soon. :D

Even the person who interviewed me for the AOS said I should not waste my time migrating here from Australia..

Why? Do you hope to eliminate racism by sweeping it under the carpet?

Making racism illegal works overseas.

Making racism illegal works overseas.

How?

Simple. By making racism a punishable crime. Be it to someone black, white, asian, alien etc..

Or do you endorse racism, therefore would be against such laws?

Its unconstitutional for the government to limit free speech, and that includes racism. Its not about being "for" or "against" racism, its about whether you support laws that limit people's constitutional rights to free speech. Once they ban racism, what's next? Sent to jail for blasphemy? For criticising the President?

If you don't like the right to free speech that the consitution gives, then I would suggest you don't like America. The constitution is woven into the fabric of life here.

Freedom has a price, and that price is having to put up with people who's opinions disgust you. As the phrase goes "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Unfortunately the Supreme Court has consistently ruled that free speech is limited despite the absolute wording in the first amendment. and I suspect most Americans would not take an absolute postion on speech. I've struggled with this myself, but i keep coming back to the fact that there is no good reason to limit speech.

Can you think of any specific cases? I'm geniunely interested here, I did a quick search and I could find cases of the opposite where the Supreme Court upheld free speech rights, for example the Supreme Court ruling that the KKK could sponsor a highway cleanup sign!
