Hi, I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for what medical insurance to buy for a trip back to one's home country while waiting for AOS.

The situation is: My husband came over from China on a K1 visa, and we are going back to China for a month to visit his family and celebrate our recent marriage with them.  We were hoping his green card would have been approved by now, but no such luck, so he will be traveling on AP.  When he quit his job and moved to the US, he lost his health insurance in China.  I want us to be covered in case of medical emergency during the trip, so I have been looking for travel health insurance plans.  All of the plans I am seeing say they are only for US citizens or permanent residents, and that they can't be used for travel to your home country.

I'm thinking maybe the only thing for him to do is to buy an insurance plan in China.  Anybody have experience with this?

Thank you!

12/18/2015- NOA 1

1/29/2016- NOA 2

2/18/2016- Letter from NVC saying they're forwarding to Guangzhou

3/4/2016- Received P3, returned it about a week later

3/22/2016- P4 email

5/12/16- Interview. Approved!

5/16/16- After a few days saying administrative processing, CEAC now says issued!

Additional snafu: my fiancé came over on his visa, but just a month later (and the day before we were going to get married) he had an emergency that necessitated him returning to China.  I contacted the Guangzhou consulate via their email system, provided the requested documents/proof, and he was granted a second interview for "reissuance."  He had to re-do the medical, redo the interview (bringing yet another copy of all of the things he had to bring the first time) and we were approved again!  He received what looked like a new visa in his passport, but the original 90 day countdown for marriage was still ticking.  He came back to the US and we got married right away!

8/22/16- Married!

I understand your concern. But medical care in China is cheap. If something serious did happen, I would not risk treatment unless anyway.

Last year while visiting I had a bad fall and really hurt my head. Went to emergency, had a cat scan, normal ER stuff. In Oregon this would cost 7K, but in Shenzhen this cost me only $35.

BTW, traveling with AP is not a great experience. When leaving China many China Customs/Immigration officers dont know what it is, so it always creates awkward experience when leaving China.

Thanks for your reply.  He has already returned to China.  What we ended up doing is that he bought insurance through a Chinese travel insurance company for pretty cheap after he arrived.  He spoke with a representative and it sounded legit and would cover him even though he is just going to be in his hometown.  Yes, I am aware that medical care is very cheap in China and that it is also often not very good, but I would be too nervous without an insurance plan in case of something catastrophic.

Thanks for the heads up on the AP travel issues.  We have prepared copies of our marriage license, his NOAs for AOS, AP, and EAD, and he of course will have his AP/EAD card and passport.  Anything else you recommend we have with us to show the Chinese Immigration people?  Thanks for your help! I'm joining him in China next week and we will come back together, so we'll just have to deal with the confused Immigration officers together.
