Hello everyone,

My Fiance is having her visa interview in Mumbai on February 17th, 7am. I am going to fly there to be with her for moral support. Does anyone know if they allow the US petitioner to the interview? Are their any tips that you would suggest from those of you that have been through Mumbai K1 interview? Any other help or guidance is much appreciated.

Here was our experience.

We entered the US embassy (Mumbai) and followed protocol. I stood with my fiancé every step of the way to the waiting room. When her ticket number was called, I walked to the counter with her. They asked what her name was. They asked who I was. How we met and how long we have been together. How many kids I have. Where I work and what my job title was. We met online so the consoler asked what our screen names were and what application we used to communicate. The only documentation they took was affidavit of support and the supporting documentation that goes with it. Then the consoler had stated she wanted additional proof of relationship. I said to her, "ma'am, all the documents you're requesting are in our folder" She then stated that she wanted us to file the documents in the format of the 221g paper. We left the embassy a little disheartened but worked very fast to get the documents required to the drop off location. Now we are on hold again to see what the decision will be. I do have one question though, if for any reason we are denied visa, what will our next step be? Refile?
Thank you all for your help throughout this process and I'm hoping for a happy ending.

That is a shocking thing to hear. I would suggest the best route would be CR1. Get married and file for CR1. It is a bit lengthy process compared to K-1, but you get a way better chance at proving your relationship.

But let's just hope that things don't come to that. I assume your case is in AP? If so, the only problem is timing. Cases in AP are considered lowest priority. That's where the catch is.

Good luck.

UPDATE.

So our status changed from administrative processing to "issued". My fiancé went to the blue dart location for passport pickup and to our surprise we received the same 221g notice that was handed to us during interview. Has anyone had this happen before? Our case status still states lssued and on the passport tracking site it states that our passport has been through consulate and is processing for delivery. What is really going on?

I had my K1 visa interview at Mumbai Consulate on April 5, 2019.

I entered the consulate at 7 a.m. where we had to wait for the initial screening of documents for about 15 mins. By 7:30 am my document screening with consular assistants was completed (since I was well ahead in the queue, the time differs how ahead or back are you in the queue). I was provided a token for my consular interview. After an hour of wait, my token number appeared on the screen for counter no. 14. I had seen people being grilled at counter no. 14 before me so I was too nervous.

A lady consular was there with my petition and all documents. She did not greet me as such but she was polite and straightforward. After the oath she started asking me the following questions:

1. Who is calling you?
2. Where does your fiance live?
3. How did you meet him?
4. On which online dating app did you meet him?
5. Did you meet him in-person?
6. Tell me more about your meeting in-person?
7. Where is his mother from?
8. Where is his dad from?
9. Have you met his dad?
10. Has his dad visited India? Is there any picture with him? (I told her that it is already there in the petition)
11. How many times has he visited you?
12. Did he visit you post 2016 with the intention to only see you?
13. How long were his every visit?
14. What does he do?
15. Who does he live with?
16. How often do you communicate?
17. Do you have any pictures?
18. Who are these people in the pictures?
19. Has he drawn you in this sketch?
20. What are your wedding plans?
21. What is the venue?
22. What is the date?
23. Is it booked yet?
24. Why haven't you booked it yet? You get just 90 days, will you be able to book in time?
25. What are your plans when you go to the United States?  (I said, I just want to marry and enjoy the marital bliss, for now, haven't planned anything for the long term)

She was convinced with my answers and immediately said, "Your visa is approved!"

The questions look too many but were asked in a conversational tone. All questions are based on your case and the complexity of it. I was prepared for any trick question but she never looked or sounded suspicious of our relationship. I feel that if your case is simple and the petition is strong then the interview is a breeze. We did not have red flags, we are of almost same age, never married, my fiance is partly Indian and we had lots of casual pictures with our families. I saw the convincing look at the consular's face on seeing our pictures from vacation and with family. So, please carry lots of pictures, they do not really see chats or call logs (still good to carry) but pictures are a primary and strong mode of convincing the consular about the bona fide relationship.

I hope my experience helps everyone out there preparing for their interview. Just relax, be yourself, and do not lie!

There are no trick questions. The CO looks to ensure a bonafide relationship exists and making sure there are no attempts to hide anything nefarious. Some countries (incl India) are classified as high fraud based on past trends. If there are no flags, interviews are routine. As rightfully noted, a relaxed and confident stature matters, and of course no lies.
