Hi guys,

I was wondering if you can please help me. I am going to the Philippines in April and I want to take an old PC of mine to the Philippines so when I go visit I have a PC there and my girlfriend can use it as well and a ring I bought my girlfriend. I have searched a lot and I am getting some conflicting answers with regards on declaring the items. Some say to declare it and others say there's no need to as its personal items. So I'm not sure as to what to do because I don't want to not declare it and then it gets confiscated or I get fined..etc, but on the other hand I don't want customs to charge me duties for a personal items that we will use and not sell. I will be dissembling the PC and carry all the parts with me in my carry on and just have the case in my check-in bag as I don't want something to happen to my bag and then the PC breaks or gets lost. What would you suggest I do?

Personal use... no reason to declare.. and gifts are personal use.

This last trip we brought 4 tablets, two phone, a laptop and a bunch of other stuff... and our dog. ;)  No one cares.  Nothing was confiscated.

Trip before that 7 tablets (mostly gifts), two laptops.

As long as it is for personal use no reason to declare.

Visa chase and citizenship.. DONE!

Airline will usually ask you to declare fragile items and have you sign waiver for them not to be held responsible so cant guarantee it would arrive safe. Now custom, no need to declare since its for personal use but travelling as tourist anything could happen such as they would randomly inspect luggage and it could be yours so you would be stuck in the airport trying to explain PC parts.

bringing in laptop is more convenient I would say or buy PC in the Philippines there are cheap ones nowadays less the hassle.Hope you would find better solution.

My very first trip to the phils I brought about 20 or 30 movies DVDs, declared them, my laptop and all that silly stuff.  Agent looked at the form, asked me what the DVDs were for, I told him so I can watch movies... he smiles and said - you do NOT need to declare items that are for personal use.

Now I go through customs in the NOTHING TO DECLARE lanes at NAIA.

Wow guys, thanks for the quick reply.

So I guess we're going with the do not declare. I don't want to buy a PC there seeing as I already have this one I can take over there and don't want to spend the cash on buying something there with a high enough spec.

Do they still hand out the declaration forms on the plan? I take it they don't?

Yes you get a declaration form.  Fill it out with name, address info ... and list nothing.

This last trip no one even bothered to take the declaration form.

Time before that I couldn't find where I had put it when I got to customs.. the agent said - I guess you have nothing to declare, smiled, and we went on our way.

Visa chase and citizenship.. DONE!

Pray tell how that went over????? No quarantine, special papers, etc.  Just curious.  I sent 3 dogs, unaccompanied, to my son after he got settled at Lakenheath, UK.  Paperwork weighed as much as the dogs :).

OP.... My recommendation is to scrap the desktop PC, whatever size, and take a $250 laptop instead.  Much more convenient to use in the PI. Don't declare anything.

Philippines requires getting an import permit, which is much easier now as I was able to do it online, time before was sending an application to the embassy.  Then the usual rabies certificate, plus a couple other vaccinations to be notated on the International Health Certificate.   The health certificate has to be approved and stamped by USDA.  When you get to NAIA they looked at the health certificate for a second, take a copy of the rabies certificate then issue you an "at home" quarantine for 30 days.

USDA was not up to speed with the new permit, they were looking for something from the embassy with a  (wait for it) red ribbon.  So I gave them copies of info I had from BAI.

Japan wanted a copy of the rabies certificate, even though we were just transiting through, I was ready for them - had it waiting in my folder.

Overall a painless experience.

Going back to the USA, you need the rabies certificate and a certificate for screw worm .. that is it.

I agree, buy a cheap laptop.  It will much more appreciated, space is a premium in the Phils, a desktop PC doesn't "fit"

I have brought computers with no problem. Don't forget to set the power supply to the right voltage before plugging it in though. The nice thing about laptops and mini PC's w/ external power supplies is that they auto sense the voltage.
