I'm planning to apply for my SSN tomorrow and the office is an hour+ drive away so I want to make sure I've got everything covered! My POE was November 1st.

I will be bringing:

1. Application

  • Part 5: Do I check "Legal Alien Allowed To Work" or "Legal Alien NOT Allowed To Work? I know I'm not allowed to work without EAD. I will be filing for EAD with my AOS, so in my mind I'm NOT allowed to work right now. RM 10211.530 chart says I'm a "Legal alien allowed to work." I don't want to go into the office uninformed about this and have a rep mess it up.
    • The instructions state that if I chose "Legal Alien NOT Allowed to Work" that I must provide documents explaining why I need an SSN. What documents are they referring to?
    • I understand that my card *should* say "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION". When I finally do receive EAD, I will present the SSN with the EAD to an employer- correct? Have any K1 applicants received an SSN with "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT"?
  • Part 9b/10b: My parents do not have SSNs. Do I leave blank or check Unknown?

2. A print out of RM 10211.530 as I've been told SSN reps can be quite ill-informed :)

3. Valid I-94 in my passport

4. Extra stuff: Long form birth certificate, License (B.C.). Anything else I should bring as supplemental docs?

If my record of arrival isn't in the SAVE system, I will refuse a manual verification and just return to the office next week.

Yep, you're on the right track. Check "illegal alien allowed to work". As you state, you will be allowed to work when EAD is received.

Leave part 9b/10b blank.

Bring the other stuff that you mention in #2 and #3. I don't think you need your birth certificate.
