Cant find out status of SSN application filed with CR2

Anyone know the best way to find out if a SSN application was even processed?

So, at the same time I filed for the CR1 / CR2 visas for my wife and step children I also checked the box for SSN numbers. They have been in the country for 2 weeks now. The cards came in the mail for my wife and stepdaughter after the first week. I have still not gotten the one for my stepson. I tried calling the national number for SS and after finally getting a person on the phone they say I have to call the local office. She did say that she did not see a number assigned for him (when looking him up by name). When I finally found a number for the local office I found out that it automatically routes to the national office. Then they tell you to call the local office...again. Arrg,,,they really want to make it difficult to get answers.

I tried to go in person this morning and the lines were ridiculous.

Does anyone know a way to find out if the process even got startred? Not sure if I should start over or not. My original thought was that it just got lost in the mail but the fact that one lady told me she could not find a number under his name concerns me.

Take him and his passport with the endorsed immigrant visa to your local SSA office. They will be able to start the process for him.
