Got the green card with misspelled name

Just got the green card in the mail today but the middle name is misspelled. We called them at 3 weeks ago when they sent the RFE to tell them that they spelled her middle name incorrectly. When they sent the first RFE everything was correct all until the second. So my question is will we be able to get a social security # so we can finally file taxes or not? Any help would be appreciated. Too bad Mdyoung is not around

I don't know if social security will issue a card or not, but should contact your local social security office and ask.

You can still file taxes and use form W-7 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf which will give you an ITIN (taxpayer id number) if you do not yet have a SSN. We brought the completed form along with the tax return to our local IRS office and they verified identification and sent off our return.

The ITIN # takes something like 6 to 8 weeks. The social security # should be faster if we can do it that way.

I would go ahead and try to get a SSN. Chances are that you will get one, possibly with a correct name. If the name is misspelled, you can always correct it later. And if they refuse... well, all you lose is half a day.

You say middle name misspelled did they put your whole middle name or just your middle initial? If it's just middle initial your good to go. SS office should give it to you.

On the top of Green card they just put initial but in the bottom of the card they put whole middle name . But we will give a try though. Thanks anyway for the response. I will tell u what the result after I'm back from SSA.

Hmmmm...guess they have changed things again? My and my son's green cards only have our middle initials (both on top and bottom of card). That's why we had a problem getting my son his learner's permit because the local DMV wanted an immigration document showing his full middle name.

I hope your local SSA office will be able to help you inspite of the misspelled middle name.

I'm sorry to hear that u had problem with DMV. I just think it will be easy if i had the initial too in the bottom of Green Card, but maybe i was wrong since DMV give u hard time because of that. Well anyway i just get back from SSA office, and I put only my initial name to show on the SSN card and the lady over there didnt asking anything about that. Probably she didnt notice that my middle name misspelled on the green card and she told me that i'd get the SSN in next 10 days.

That's my experience today.Thanks anyone for reply my post. I really appreciate it.

Thanks eau_xplain, i was so nervous before i went to SSA just thinking that they probably will deny me and wont process my SSN but now that feeling is gone.
