RIO DE JANEIRO — Ryan Lochte and three other U.S. swimmers were held up at gunpoint early Sunday morning.

Lochte described the incident to NBC on Sunday afternoon.

"We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over," Lochte said. "They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground — they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like we didn't do anything wrong, so — I'm not getting down on the ground.

"And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, 'Get down,' and I put my hands up, I was like 'whatever.' He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials."

His mother Ileana Lochte first confirmed the robbery to USA TODAY Sports on Sunday morning.

RIO DE JANEIROBrazilian authorities removed two American Olympians from their flight to the U.S. late Wednesday, as police escalated an investigation into an alleged armed robbery of U.S. Olympic star Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers.

The police obtained a court order allowing them to detain and question the swimmers, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger, a person familiar with the matter said. The two were later released without having answered questions, according to their lawyer, Sérgio Riera, who added they cant leave the country until they provide testimony.

Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were detained Wednesday night shortly before their flight was scheduled to depart from Rio, said Patrick Sandusky, United States Olympic Committee spokesman. They were released by local authorities with the understanding that they would continue their discussions about the incident on Thursday.

This is a weird-### story. I don't know what to think.

I do.

They went and cut up at that gas station. Then when things got heated, concocted the story about the robbery. Since they're famous gold medal winners, they believed the story. Now that's it's come out that's not the case, too bad so sad.

Still don't get it. Were they stoned? Who thought this was a good plan?

I'll break it down Barney style.

A bunch of jocks in a poor country decided to act up. It's a poor, dark country. Crime is well known. And Lochte is a gold medal winner. Who are you going to believe initially?

These guys were drunk, got into a fight in a gas station right next to a hospital. Then made up this story about robbery accusing the Brazilian police without any evidence. Well now there are witnesses backed by surveillance cameras footage proving that there was no robbery, just a bunch of drunk people getting into trouble in a gas station.

Is Brazil a poor country?

Brazil is a middle-income country and is rich in natural resources, but poverty levels and human development indicators in poor rural areas are comparable to those in the poorest countries of Latin America. In the country as a whole, about 35 per cent of the population lives in poverty, on less than two dollars a day.

This is about rural areas. There are poor regions in pretty much every country in the world. But saying that Brazil, which was a larger economy than the United Kingdom until 2012, is a poor country, is wrong. If you say that the income distribution is that of a undeveloped country, then I'll agree with you. But no, not a poor country at all.
