Hey guys,

My wife got a letter a few days ago to take the naturalization test in Charleson, SC. What's puzzling is we live in Greer and have been going to the Greer office for all the required visits (finger printing, etc). Do you think this could be an error? All her paperwork was filed with the Greer office and Charleston is a 3+ hour drive from us one way. Has this happened before? Is it possible to change test sites?

Smaller offices often pool their oath ceremonies, that is likely what happened here. If you know for sure Greer does do oath ceremonies, you could ask for a later oath date and hope you get the different location, but there is no guarantee.

Assuming we drive to Charleston and she takes the test and passes... do we have to drive down again for the ceremony? Or does this occur right after she passes?

Oh I am sorry, I missread... I thought she'd already done that and it was just the oath that was left.

Some places do "same day oaths" and some do not; the same day option seems rare these days. You could try searching here for experiences, or try and see if they have a website which states it.

The Charleston and Greer field offices do not have same day ceremonies.

Your ceremony won't necessarily be held in the same city as the interview. You can indicate your preference to the interviewer, and he/she may or may not be able to accommodate you. However, by switching to a location closer to home, you would be giving up the "first available" option and may end up waiting longer. Both offices (based on the pages above) hold frequent ceremonies, although judicial ceremonies (required in the case of a name change) are less frequent.

You'll also see on those pages that Charleston is called a Field Office, while Greer is called a Field Support Office, which may mean that not all services are available at the Greer location.
