Hi-

I married a USC in January of 2012. Did consular processing from Montreal. Became a CR1 in December 2012. In April of 2014 we divorced and I successfully removed conditions with divorce waiver. I started dating someone new recently and he is leading to me to believe he wants to get serious. The problem is I need to return to Canada for an unknown amount of time due to family issues. I was advised I should get a re-entry permit but it cannot be used for multiple uses and I would not want to have any hassle going back and forth to be with family and boyfriend. I may be thinking ahead but How peculiar would it be if I needed to abandon my gc for spending too much time out of the states and then re-applying in the future someday if my boyfriend and I were to marry?

It would not be peculiar.

A Reentry permit is good for multiple entries and would give you 2 years outside the US without abandoning your residency, if that helps you.

You can leave the US for a year without doing anything special, and still keep your residency.

Definitely try for the re-entry permit; as mentioned you can use it for several travels and if you, long term, want to stay in the USA it is the best choice for you.

If you end up abandoning the greencard and re-applying later, you will be asked about the old case, but as long as you have a lot of bondafide evidence with the new man, it should not be a problem.
