Texas congressman Ron Paul formally announces presidential candidacy

12:16 PM CDT on Monday, March 12, 2007

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Nine-term Texas Congressman Ron Paul formally announced his candidacy for the GOP presidential nomination today.

Appearing on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal,” Paul said he was at first reluctant to run. But he said “a lot of people want to hear my message and I’m willing to deliver it.”

Paul describes himself as a lifelong libertarian. He who formed an exploratory committee in January, and says he’s raised more than $500,000 in the past month “with every little effort.”

Paul ran for the White House as a Libertarian Party candidate in 1988. He’s spent three days campaigning in New Hampshire and is planning trips to Arizona and Iowa, homes to some of the nation’s earliest caucuses and primaries. He said he expects to be included in any GOP candidate debates.

The obstetrician and gynecologist from just south of Houston is far from the Republican mainstream, and he acknowledges he’s been largely shunned by the national party. He has criticized President Bush for acting unconstitutionally in sending U-S troops to Iraq, and he’s said he’d support an investigation into whether Bush “deliberately misrepresented” his reasons for doing so.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

What's the difference between libertarian and republican nowadays anyway? Not too much as far as I can tell...

The Bushbots are the farthest thing imaginable from a Libertarian.

Not saying there aren't things that I agree with as far as the Libertarian party goes, and yes, there is a difference between the libertarians and the Bushbots, but from my perspective, libertarians fall to the right.

It's possible I've gotten the wrong idea. Most of what I know about libertarianism I've heard from talk radio heads that claim to be libertarians...

I don't know about the Libertarian Party here is the USA but I'm Libertarian and Socialist. The true libertarian ideal of government haveing no input into or control over the private life of citizens is compatible with any economic view.

The Bushbots are fiscally conservative but are closer to Facist than Libertarian.

For an idea of my views - legalise illegal drugs now, tax the heck out of them and use the tax revenue towards universal healthcare costs. :)

Answer is that the Libertarians are more like imitation-Thatcherites (as in Brit Tories) while Republicans are more like Chretien-Martinites (Canadian Liberals).

(I guess you must be more Laytonite NDP then).

Libertarian ideology falls apart in practical application - at least the type that is here in the U.S..

Basically, Thatcher's whole approach wouldn't have worked at all outside Britain (as to whether it worked IN Britain, debatable--and out of glister for this thread).
