My Philippine fiancée’s passport expires in March 2017. We were just (NOA2) approved on 1-28-16 and was told she has plenty of time left on passport as long as she enters USA six months before it expires.

  • What happens when it expires in the USA and we want to visit her family in the Philippines after her arrival in the USA?
  • Does she need to get US Passport?
  • or does she need to renew her Philippine Passport?
  • if so how does she renew her Philippine passport from State of Washington where we will live?

any consulate in the USA can issue a new passport for her.

Only USCitizens can receive USA Passports, so bear that in mind as yer planning yer calendar.

  • What happens when it expires in the USA and we want to visit her family in the Philippines after her arrival in the USA? After POE arrival and marriage, must file AOS soonish. AOS alone can take > 6 months. Will need I-131 Advance Parole document and her valid Phil. passport for international travel.
  • Does she need to get US Passport? That is likely several years down the road, after visa approval, POE, marriage, AOS, ROC.....
  • or does she need to renew her Philippine Passport? likely a good idea.
  • if so how does she renew her Philippine passport from State of Washington where we will live? Google search for closest Phil. consulate. Check-in at Phil. Regional forum for roving consulate-services schedule and details.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

yup. Any PI Consulate in the USA. Each one has an outreach program as well, they send staffers into the wilderness to help out it's citizens. Check the schedule, it's posted in exceptionally weird and ungoogle-able places online. [No, I'm not kidding]

Any USA consulate? My worry is are there any Philippine Embassy's near the state of Washington where we will be living. Or will we have to travel 2000 miles to east coast Philippine Embassy.

A point of correction, there is only one Philippine embassy, located in Washington, DC. There are five Philippine consulates in the US.

My Philippine fiancée’s passport expires in March 2017. We were just (NOA2) approved on 1-28-16 and was told she has plenty of time left on passport as long as she enters USA six months before it expires. *your fiancee should be fine. if you are worried about her passport expiring in March 2017, she should be here in the US by September this year and that's roughly 6-7 months from passport expiration. if you already have the NOA2 then it should be quick from hereon out. make sure she has all the documents needed for the interview like NBI Clearance, NSO-certified birth certificate, NSO-certified Certificate of No Marriage, Police Certificates from other countries if she has lived more than 6 months in that country, among others.

  • What happens when it expires in the USA and we want to visit her family in the Philippines after her arrival in the USA? *as soon as she gets here in the US, get married as soon as possible. although you have 90 days to do it but the sooner you get married, the sooner she'll be able to adjust status and apply for EAD and Advance parole which will let her leave the US for emergencies while her AOS is pending. EAD and Advance Parole documents usually takes about 90 days to get approved. here's the timeline i would suggest after she gets here:
  • 1. get married
  • 2. file for AOS, EAD, and AP right away after you get your certified true copy of your marriage certificate
  • 3. wait for biometrics appointment which is usually a month after you submit her application
  • 4. after biometrics, renew her passport to the nearest consulate which in the Washington State, San Francisco consulate has jurisdiction. either you go to San Francisco to renew her passport or wait for consular outreach but they are on schedule. i would suggest go to San Francisco. passport renewal takes about 2-3 months.

@the earliest the she can go back to the Philippines if she has to would be 3 months after filing for AOS. please remember she needs to have the Advance Parole document when she leaves the US because the K1 visa she has on her passport becomes void once she enters the US. it is only good for one time entry.

  • Does she need to get US Passport? she has to wait for three years before she can apply for naturalization, becomes naturalized USC. then she can apply for US passport.
  • or does she need to renew her Philippine Passport?
  • if so how does she renew her Philippine passport from State of Washington where we will live? go to San Francisco consulate or you can check out their consular outreach schedule for Washington state on their website www.philippinessanfrancisco.org

Hi Randy.. I suggest she do the early renewal of her passport before her interview. With this you don't have to worry on renewing while you need to file for AOS.

That is the most common problem in renewing Philippines passport in the US, the Philippine consulate is only located on certain states and releasing is much longer. My mom renewed her passport in LA and it took 6 months for her to get it. She is only from Sand Diego.

You can renew in DFA Aseana for an expedite process, it will only take 10 working days.

If she'll change her name when she marries you she'll need a new passport anyway with her new name, no matter when the old passport expires.

Once your fiancee (wife) is in the states and she needs to renew her passport she will go to the consulate servicing that state. Once married you will want to complete Report of Marriage at the Philippines consulate also, then would be a good time to get the passport renewed in the married name.
