To the Brits - do you think everything here in the US is too sweet?

Simon is constantly crabbing about everything being too sweet! The bread, the beans, the pastry, you name it, and he thinks it's too sweet.

Is it just him, or do others feel this way too? I don't notice it, but then again, I've always been here. Eating up the sweet life I guess! ----sorry, that was bad, I know.

Yes.. to me when i first came here.. i didn't like the bread or the beans.. i did find other foods somewhat sweet.. but i also didn't like the chocolates here either..

My fiancee loved the food here, especially the sweet stuff, for him the sweeter richer it was the happier he was. He never complained about anything being too sweet and he made an instant love for oatmeal pies, twinkies, and our version of pancakes lol hes always begging for me to send him some. I guess it could depend where you live at in the UK too, he lives in a very very very small country town there no fast food places or restuarants even close to him which was another thing he got into really big over here, I think he lived off subway for like a week straight. Ill have to watch him when he moves here for good, Im guessing he put on 15-20lbs in 3 months when he was here for his last visit cause he ate so much junk/fast food because he liked it so much.

I think the food over here is great. I've put on too much weight but my wife is a great cook - I just can't help myself.

The bread is definately sweeter and takes some getting used to....my other rant about the bread is that it is so small.........I would love to have a loaf of Warburtons or Rathbones right now.

As for the desert stuff I dont think that is any sweeter than the deserts in the UK.

I have been here 2 years and I still find everything too sweet.... I will never understand why they have to put corn syrup in everything.... you can bye the same products here as in the UK but the version here has corn syrup added....

I refuse to eat anything that has corn syrup in it. If it's too sweet, don't eat it! We don't eat anything processed and only eat at restaurants that are part of a "Fresh Food" network. The other problem over here is the sodium content. It's very scary! The only thing I buy that comes out of a can is tuna in spring water. Everything else we make from scratch. We're very lucky enough to have a good local co-op (oh, how I wish we had a Trader Joes!) and a vegetable garden in the summer months which almost feeds us through the winter (we freeze the veg). The only other shop we use is the offie. Supermarkets are for buying loo roll now. Nowt much else I want in there.

I look at the back of most things. If it has HFCS in it....I tend to avoid it. The stuff without it IS there, you just have to look very hard. I have found some bread that doesn't have it in, plus I have my own breadmaker, which helps.

He does make his own bread and pie pastry, so that seems to make him happy. And when I buy bread now, I just get him the most plain white bread I can find, which I find totally vile. I like something with tons of grains and nuts in it, but he hates it.

Ok - I'm glad to know he's not the only one who finds everything here too sweet (I'm not talking about desserts, those are SUPPOSED to be sweet).

Oh - and butter, he freaked out over how Americans use butter as a condiment.

Yep, I find a lot of things too sweet, too. But then again I don't really have much of a sweet tooth.

Tim claims everything here is flavorfull, and he loves it. Shocked he hasn't put on weight! I have seen others complain about the bread here, but he has always emphasized how fresh it stays and he enjoys it more than sliced bread back home. We do however buy a lot of fresh baked breads which don't tend to be as sweat and have less preservatives.

Our chocolate is lacking in anything good, so we buy better chocolates. I think I complain more about the choccie than he does.

Generally food tastes more flavorful in the US but I can't eat US chocolate as it actually hurts my teeth, and most sweet things are just too sweet for me. My son says the same too.

My husband who hates British food because it's too bland and not sweet in comparison to what he's been used to all his life has now converted to Brtitish chocolate though - especially Dairy Milk - never thought I would see the day!
