Even if you owe zero taxes, one must still file something which proves that, unless he was under the minimum amount for which no filing is required.

Usually they suggest the past three years copies of the full return filing or the tax transcripts free from the IRS and proof of current income...the latter is the key.

Thanks a lot! Now we have something to do before the interview!

I was working outside the US for almost 2 years) when i met my spouse/ the company did not take out witholding taxes and i was required to pay directly to the US on form 1040 ES my estimated tax quarterly, to file 1040 each spring and pay any additional taxes still owed. This includes unemplyment taxes and Social Security taxes. On the 1040 in the spring a US citizen is pentialized for not paying enough in the quarterly estimated tax payments. It is better to pay too much and get a refund than to owe at this point.

You need a better tax consutlant as only a few government and military employees and senior citiizens do not nave to pay taxes and do a tax return each spring

He needs to correct this immediately

Good luck

He is familiar with tax laws, but apparently not much! He said Justin's case is something special he hasn't dealt before and he is not sure what has to be done.

Well, we will investigate ourselves then and sort it.

Thank you!

Something special? Justin is not the first USC to live and work abroad. There are 8.7 million non-military USC living abroad. I hardly would call that something special.

If he hasn't dealt with it before and was not sure what has to be done, then isn't it his job to research the matter instead of pulling an answer out of his ###? Especially an answer that is detrimental to his client?

Justin needs an accountant; not a fool giving his opinions as sound advice without any basis in the law.
