Hello everyone,

my fiance and I are about to start our journey (nervousness) and are right now collecting everything we need for the I-129F.

I read on the wiki checklist that we need to include my Divorce Decree but I only have it in Swedish and need to get it translated into English. Do I need to find a certified translator and if so, where do I find one?

No, anyone who can do the translation can do it, but they just need to add a sheet stating and signed that they are certifying that they are proficient and able to do the translation.

Agree with above poster, you can do the translation yourself. Include a statement like below:

Kammarkollegiet is the certified translator our embassy uses, but can´t answer the question if you need it translated there or not.

I just had my Hungarian divorce decree translated and then certified at the Hungarian Embassy (I live abroad). I had it translated online with the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd. and when I asked for this certification closure they said they don't and cannot add it unless I provide the original document. A certified translation is an inseparable addition to the original document. Mine is sealed with the stamp of the Hungarian embassy and the signature of the consul. If it wasn't like this, the "I certify that the attached document is an accurate translation" would be very weak as you could swap the attached original any time. I believe the translation and its certification has to be as official as the original document. But it's just my opinion. I think it is not bad to have an official English version if you are gonna live in the US anyways.

EDIT: certifying translations of official documents issued by Hungarian authorities is regulated in Hungary, it can only be done by the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd and some governmental organizations such as a Hungarian Embassy. I recommend to check how it is in Sweden.

I guess you could technically have it translated yourself but when you go to the interview in Stockholm you will have to have it translated by the Kammarkollegiet.

My husband translated some document himself as he read that it was ok on VisaJourney. BUT when we got to Embassy level they send you an email stating that the translation need to be certified translator. When I read it I was so mad and stressed about it as now time is of matter. Luckily we don't have to translate all those pappers because we won't need to use it as the situation has changed for us. But I'm still having a head-deck with another document that has to be translated and certified. So take my advise and get it done from the beginning! I attached what the Embassy sent us just so you know (and the highlighted are was sent like that by the Embassy, NOT me)

All documents not in English must be accompanied by certified translations. Please note that the applicant cannot him/herself translate the documents. The translation must include a statement signed by the translator that states that the:

Translation is accurate, and,

Translator is competent to translate.
