My fiance is always telling me that it is not a good idea for me to keep looking for permanent work until she has visa in hand. So, that would be, what, spring time from now? She says they will be confused why I changed jobs and they have to search a new address and payroll, etc. She says part time jobs okay, but if I change to a new job, or even move, it will cause massive delays.

Thoughts?

What matters is a steady income that will meet 125% of the poverty guidelines or you will need a joint sponsor.

6 months of paychecks will show consistencies for a current stable job with an employment letter etc.....

2 months will not and that can make it a bit harder depending on the embassy.

Spoiler

I believe your fiancé is wrong- do your best to find a better job, while also working your temp jobs. Even if you have to put more time or effort into the visa process, or even delay it a bit to get the necessary information from a new employer, it will still be better in the long run. Wouldn't a better, long term, stable job be a better thing with your new wife, than scrambling around for temp jobs? Don't delay, and good luck!

I'm a self-employed contractor. As long as I consistently made the required minimum, I was fine. I change contracts on a monthly basis. No issues.

Thanks for the answers. For me, I am a contractor by a recruiting company, not self employed. So they determine my duration, which is usually renewed every six months. So far, been 1.5y but not a permanent job, nor with any benefits. I have been looking for work for four years since my layoff. I was in the same company for fifteen years until laid off in 2011. I never owed taxes until then. If they let me go, I got a major issue because if there was something better, I be there now. In the meantime, I still need to find medical insurance because I can not afford plans people can buy.

Anyway, she has told me cases of people she known that had their counterparts switch jobs and the interviewers and such were confused to find the new addresses and bits. I think they may not have had the proper paperwork to show, that we normally sign showing duties, pay, etc.

I do see Ebunoluwa's point that if someone changed jobs and only had a couple of weeks of pay stubs, maybe that could be an issue. But who knows when I will find a job that is stable, so I keep on looking. I just do not want the people doing all this to see me as a temp. Who knows what they will write, the recruiters, when the day comes I ask them to just write me a proof of employment, to give for her interview.

Steady employment / income I think trumps most things. Considering how long the processe(es) can take I am sure this is likely a situation many have had to encounter and as others suggest being better able to support the beneficiary / family should only be a good thing. Unless you have to move and that impacts timing of something scheduled, should be fine and just be up front about it. You can also state your availability to prospective employers...if you have an interview or something just say you can't start til x date after.

I started a new job in August, after being laid off for 4 months. I had previously worked for the same company for 18 years. As soon as I started the new job, I filed the I-129. The complication is that I currently work 270 miles from my home, and in December, after finishing training and preparation work, I will move to California. No steady address for 4 months. I just put down my office address on all of my forms (JamnSol, care of xxx employer...) and so far it has not been a problem- I've received my NOA's, etc. I think it is much more important to be doing your best to improve your life than to try to "optimize" yourself for the application.
