G2 Drivers License Equals.... what in Florida?

Any fellow K1 or IR/CR1 visa holders from Ontario can help me out here?

I'm reading on the Florida DMV site that I have the option to surrender my Canadian drivers license in able to get my Florida one and do not have to take the drivers test, written test etc.

My question is in Ontario we have 3 steps to get your full, I only have a G2 with the only restriction (That I know of) is that I cannot have any alcohol at all in my system. Florida only has two steps so would they just consider that equal to their full? (it pretty much is minus the blood alcohol level as they don't do "highway" tests in the states and according to my wife I've taken the equivalent of their driving test needed to get a full plus some)

I just want to know what to expect. I have no time/money anymore to take my G test here so I just want to know roughly if I have no choice but to do the test in Florida even if I tell them I want to surrender the Canadian licence because in Ontario at least, I'm still considered to be a non-fully licensed driver (despite only having one restriction which is logical).

Also does it cost money to get it changed or is it free within the first 30 days? And all I need is a valid VISA right to get it? (Not a green card as that probably won't come in 30 days)

You need G before u can completely transfers without any test .

Seriously? I've been on a g2 for 10 years and they're gonna make me take the test again? That's so silly....but is that just what they did in New York (seeing your profile there). Don't rules differ state to state? I think NY Is one of the stricter ones for driving laws isn't it?

Either way, I'm expecting to have to take a test again but was hoping maybe not....again it's just ridiculous as they don't do "Highway" tests in the US (Not in Florida anyways) so I see no reason why I have to be bumped back to learners/take any test again.

Thanks for your insight though, I'll go in expecting them to tell me to take the written and driving test AGAIN, but hope maybe I won't have too.

Omg. G2 for 10 years lol why u didn't go for your G ?????.

Most of the states in the US only have 2 stages for the DL only canada have 3 stages . I know you cannot drive in NY with G2.

I didn't realize you couldn't just keep a G2...and my understanding at the time was the only restriction was the drinking thing (I had got it when they got rid of the curfew) again because I don't drink so I saw no hurry or need lol. Then when I renewed it they told me this is the last time I can do that :S At least it's valid for another 10 months should something delay me.

I keep looking this up and I'm getting mixed messages, some say Florida doesn't give a damn and others say they do...I guess maybe it depends who you get? Haha, I don't know :P

Haha really? Funny I drove to the Belmont Stakes back in 2014. Glad I wasn't pulled over for anything!

Did you go down on a G2 and had to do it out of curiosity?

Thats a real shame.....and a money grab if you ask me.

You might have to do the general knowledge tests but from what I've heard the road test is simple

I'm in the same debate as you.... and from what i've read so far, some people have said that their G2's were transferred to G licenses in Florida and all they had to do was take a written test, but of course i'm pretty sure that may be a case by case basis, but it is at least a possibility. Another thing to consider is that you are allowed to drive on your Ontario license for a certain period of time (I think a year? i'm not sure, you will have to look it up) under your current restrictions of a G2 and forego getting your FL license until it is less of a hassle. Which brings me to my next point...

You will also need more than just your Ontario license to get a FL one. Here is a link to an extremely useful form that will tell you the documents you need to get your FL license; http://www.gathergoget.com/

Just plug in your information and click through, and it should tell you all the information you need.

K-1 Visa Process (182 days from I-129F filed -> Visa in Hand)

 

 

May 10th, 2015: Got Engaged!

June 12th 2015: Fiance filed I-129F, June 19th, 2015: (NOA1) Received at California Service Center

July 23rd, 2015: (NOA2) NVC received

Aug 31st, 2015: NVC Approved and fwd case to consulate in Montreal. MTL case # given.

Sept 8th, 2015: MTL received and sent P3 by mail, Sept 18th, 2015: P3 received in mail, Sept 18th, 2015: DS-160 completed and P3 documents sent by e-mail

Sept 21st, 2015: P3 Approved. Received P4 by e-mail, Sept 21st, 2015: Booked K-1 Visa interview for December 2nd, 2015!!

Oct 2nd, 2015: Booked Medical in Toronto for November 12th, 2015

Nov. 12th, 2015: Medical done in Toronto, ON with Dr Lyndon Mascarenhas. Highly recommend him!!

I know, about a year later (I just got my license switched over) and guess what? They gave me a full under a g2 and even honored my expired card as it was only a day....

Not sure if I was extremely lucky or if rules have changes since the only restriction on a g2 is drinking...so yeah....yay haha!
