What does the potential government shut down mean for us?

It really won't be that bad. Not ideal, for sure, but it won't effect you all that much. Plus, it's looking to be over the holiday time, when many government employees would be taking off anyway. If it even happens (Dec 11 is the date), it is unlikely to go into the new year. I wish I could find an answer about whether or not NVC shut down during the 2013 shutdown. That is the big question mark for me.

The only thread I found here is about how they will continue because the workers are contractors. This is not true. If an agency is largely staffed by contractors, if it shuts down, the contractors can't work either. Partly because the buildings cannot be open (paying for security, janitorial, electricity...no funds for it) and also because the contracting companies can't work without pay. (Literally, it is illegal for a contracting company to work for free, otherwise they'd get to be known as the company that gives freebies, and would have unfair advantage in competing for contracts which is basically a fancy form of kickback), and if the government is shut down for lack of funding....then they'd be working for free. The difference between government and contract is that NO government employees get paychecks during the shutdown (but are generally reimbursed later), SOME (generally the larger and wealthier ones) contracting companies continue to pay their employees during a shutdown, at least for a few weeks, while others do not. And those that do not, do not reimburse their employees later.

I don't know about USCIS but my cousins husband works for border patrol (drives an immigration bus) and there was a time this year where he hadn't been paid for two months but still had to work. I'm sure that will happen if there's a shutdown

I hope that all this shut down doesnt effect NVC to that extent that it stops working we are already stuck at NVC and pray to Allah that our case get complete before this shut down hits
